Formula 1: Narain Karthikeyan predicts a strong HRT show in 2011
33-year-old Indian Formula 1 driver Narain Karthikeyan has claimed that his team Hispania Racing Team will be better prepared for the 2011 season as compared to their debut season in 2010.
After the announcement of his comeback to the pinnacle of the sport, Narain is spending most of his time training for the required fitness level of Formula 1. He had a chat to the media recently where he hinted a stronger upcoming season.
When asked the question about his age, he said that there were older drivers in the sport who had no problems. German legend Michael Schumacher returned to the sport in 2010 aged 42 and Narain said that age was just a number for him.
HRT ended up at 11th place in the constructors’ standings in 2010 and could not get a single point. However, Narain said that it would be harsh to compare the last season with the new one. He stated, “Last year, HRT didn't do enough testing -
they went straight for the race. This year, the situation is different. They have some data and experience. You can't compare last year to this year as we'll be well prepared.”
The Indian driver was hopeful of a good comeback season as he said that the team will undergo many technical developments which will help them to match the midfielders in the races.
Commenting on his sponsors Tata, he said, “Tata Group has backed me for now. I wouldn't be in this position without them, that's for sure. Plus, other sponsors have all stuck by me, Speed, MRF Tyres and Amaron.”
Narain last raced in Formula 1 in 2005 with Jordan where his best finish was fourth at the US Grand Prix. He also represented the Indian team in the World Cup of motorsports, A1 Grand Prix where he finished amongst top ten drivers.
India will also host its first-ever Formula 1 race in October 2011 and Narain is delighted to get the opportunity to race in his home country.
