Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone hoping for a tightly fought 2012 season – Formula 1 news
Bernie Ecclestone has said that he is hoping for a much closer battle on the grid in the 2012 season than in 2011.
The previous season was an exceptional display of dominance from the Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel. The German finished the season with 11 Grands Prix wins and 17 podium finishes. Such was his dominance that his teammate Mark Webber who is no amateur
behind the wheel only managed a single Grand Prix win in the season. That too came only after Vettel was trying to finish the race safely as he encountered a technical fault in the car and had to slow down his pace considerably.
The Formula 1 boss Ecclestone has said that if Red Bull comes up with another dominant car for the 2012 season he hopes that Webber can give a hard time to Vettel and make him earn his wins.
“I don't want Red Bull to dominate in the same way but I fear that's what will happen. That's why I put my hopes on Mark Webber's shoulders. This year we will see a situation where he can show his talent much more,” said Bernie.
Talking about other teams, he said that he would be surprised if Mercedes do not win a Grand Prix in the upcoming season. He gave credibility to the speculations that Mercedes GP are working hard to come up with a much improved and competitive car.
“I would be surprised if Mercedes don't win a race this year. As for Ferrari, I can only hope they improve significantly. Alonso is super-talented and deserves a perfect car,” he added.
He also mentioned that Ferrari need to come with a competitive car as well as he feels that Fernando Alonso is a fantastic driver and should be given a car that can win Grands Prix.
Ferrari have also had a couple of bad seasons which has been noted by their president Luca di Montezemolo. He duly warned his team that they need to pull up their socks for the 2012 season.
The 2012 season is going to begin in March and is shaping up to be very exciting.
