Formula 1 commission to discuss Qualifying rule changes at meeting in Geneva – Formula 1 news
Formula 1 is considering changes to rules for Qualifying sessions after some of the cars opt not to race in the Q3 in order to save tyres for the raceday.
A report has revealed that the Formula 1 commission meeting scheduled for Thursday in Geneva will discuss the plan to increase the allocation of tyres for the final round of qualifying.
The issue has been ongoing for some time now, and Pirelli Chief Paul Hembery has been at the forefront of pursuing the rule change to save the wastage of tyres.
Although Hembery said that when he had the meeting with the teams, they agreed that the current tyre regulations have no issues at the moment.
“We had a good collaborative meeting with the teams, and at the moment their opinion is that there is nothing wrong with Q3. They feel it adds a strategic element to Q3. Plus, with teams battling in that mid ground there, the margins are very fine and they
feel that it is a new element of qualifying,” Hembery added while talking to Autosport.com.
Hembery said if they teams are happy with the way the rules are setup right now, there is not much he can do. He also explained how the rule can be tweaked in a lot of ways, and those permutations have been discussed at the meeting.
“We will see what happens at the F1 Commission meeting. It has been raised by somebody else perhaps. We will see what everyone has to say when we have the opportunity to work together,” Hembery further added.
The tyre allocation rule was also pursued by Bridgestone before Pirelli was officially named the tyre provider for Formula 1. After Pirelli took over, they have been in constant talks with the teams to try and change the rule.
It is interesting to note that the rule change issue to be discussed by the commission has not been raised by Paul Hembery. It is yet unknown who raised the issue again but it will be of great interest to Pirelli.
It remains to be seen what is the outcome of the meeting that is going to be held this Thursday.
