Formula 1 drivers’ standings after 2011 Singapore Grand Prix
After an eventful Singapore Grand Prix this past weekend, it seems that the statistics and everything in between is still heading towards the same direction as it was since the beginning of the 2011 Formula 1 season.
Sebastian Vettel dominantly won the race ahead of Jenson Button’s McLaren and his own teammate Mark Webber.
It was believed that Vettel could even seal the championship if he wins the race at the Marina Bay this past weekend but it seems that he might have to wait for one more race until that happens.
Jenson Button finished in 2nd place as a result of which the championship is still not over mathematically. Logically however, the championship is pretty much over and it is quite clear that the young German will secure his second world championship for sure by the end of the 2011 Formula 1 season.
Button is currently 124 points adrift of the championship leader while the rest of the pack behind him is quite close to him. Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber are in 3rd and 4th places respectively in the drivers’ standings but the difference between the 2nd place driver and 4th place driver is just 3 points. As a result, it is believed that the battle for the 2nd place in the drivers’ standings is going to get quite interesting in the remainder of the season.
Either way, Vettel just needs to finish 2 points ahead of Jenson Button to confirm the title next weekend and it seems that it is just a matter of time before the reigning world champion is crowned as the world champion for the second time in a row.
Other than the front runners, Lewis Hamilton had a pretty disappointing race this past weekend as he finished in 5th place which was quite amazing keeping in mind that he went through a lot of issues including a crash in the race.
He is currently in 5th place in the drivers’ standings as well but is currently 17 points adrift of his teammate in the drivers’ standings which is going to make it quite difficult for him to catch up with his rivals in the final 5 races of the season.
Since there are just 5 races left in 2011, this means that for drivers, there is a maximum of 125 points left. Anything is still possible statistically but according to the performance of each team, McLaren are looking very sharp while Mark Webber is struggling to perform and it seems that he might not be able to catch up with his teammate anytime soon in terms of pace.
Sebastian Vettel is in a world of his own and so are the remaining drivers of the drivers’ championship as Felipe Massa is currently in 6th place with 84 points just ahead of Nico Rosberg who has scored 62 points.
He is further followed by Michael Schumacher who is 10 points further adrift. Vitaly Petrov and Nick Heidfeld are currently in 9th place with 34 points each which shows that Renault have been struggling throughout the 2011 Formula 1 season and the main reason for that is that they have not been able to consistently improve their car comparative to their rivals and the rest of the teams of the grid.
