Formula 1 resuming the competition with the Belgian Grand Prix – Formula 1
The Formula 1 fraternity is gearing up for the resumption of the season after a month long summer break.
The 2012 season has been an exciting and unpredictable year so far and a lot is expected from the remainder of the season. The sport has not been accustomed to such competitiveness in recent years as has been on display in the season with the top five teams
fighting it out for the titles battle.
The leading driver is Fernando Alonso with Mark Webber, Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen to follow. All four drivers following Alonso are in serious contention for the drivers’ title and the gap between the drivers is very tight.
Webber is 40 points behind Alonso with 124 points in the season so far while the fifth placed Raikkonen has 116 points only 8 points behind. It shows just how fierce the battle is going to down in the remainder of the season.
Vettel is only two points behind Webber and Hamilton only seven. All four drivers following Alonso cannot afford to lose out on any opportunity of gaining points over the other while the Ferrari driver has been brilliant in the season and is reaping the
benefits by sitting comfortably at the top with a wiggle room of 40 points which is huge considering how tight the races have been.
The constructors’ championship is a little different in its positions but the battle is just as fierce. Red Bull is at the top of the table with 246 points followed by McLaren with 193 and Lotus with 192. Ferrari are at fourth with 189 points even though
the team has been a one man show with Felipe Massa not doing much to support Alonso.
Mercedes is at fifth but are virtually out of the title hunt at this point with only 106 points. The battle is very much on for the top four. If the Hungarian Grand Prix was indicative of anything before the summer break it was that McLaren looked very
good followed closely by Red Bull in terms of car performance. At third would be Lotus and then Ferrari who clearly looked worried going into the summer break and plan to come up with another upgrade to the car to keep the competition alive.
The situation of the points table is such that it makes the Belgian Grand Prix very crucial for drivers and teams to make the best of the race. It will be interesting to see how the race pans out. It is scheduled for September 2, 2012.
