Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone praises Pirelli for improving the sport in the 2011 season
The chief of Formula 1 Management Bernie Ecclestone praised Pirelli in a recent statement as he believes that the lone tyre suppliers were brave enough to produce tyres that degrade quickly which improved the sport.
Since the beginning of the 2011 Formula 1 season, racing has become more unpredictable comparatively as the factor of a race strategy has been reintroduced to the sport. The amount of grip offered by new and old tyres is quite noticeable as well.
Pirelli produced such tyres deliberately and now, tyres are usable only for 15-25 laps at max. Bernie believes that other tyre companies would have been quite uncomfortable if they were put in a situation like this.
“Only Pirelli would do it, and we must thank them. It was brave and the show has improved. Michelin and Bridgestone refused to build tyres like this because they were worried about their image,” he told the media.
Ecclestone claims that 90 percent of the difference in the sport this year is because of Pirelli as the Drag Reduction System and Kinetic Energy Recovery System have not been as productive as the new tyres.
“The effect of the adjustable rear wing is not entirely clear, and KERS was never meant to be a passing aid but was instead for the message we give to the outside,” said the chief executive officer of Formula 1 Management.
Other than that, he stated that he is not a fan of the efforts F1 is making in order to appear ‘green’ by producing cars that are more environment friendly and cheap as it would affect the quality of the sport drastically.
“Environmentally friendly technology is for touring cars. That's where it makes sense, because the cars you see there you also see on the street. If you compare formula one with other sports, it isn't bad,” he added.
He claims that “Tour de France burns more fuel than Formula 1” and since Formula 1 is quite a unique and legendary motorsport, they should be allowed to use their own piece of machinery which is not available in any other sport.
