Formula 1 team principals choose Fernando Alonso as best driver of 2012 – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has been chosen as the best driver of the 2012 Formula 1 season in the annual team principals’ top ten poll been conducted by Autosport.
The Scarlet team faced immense difficulties during the pre-season testing programme this year as they failed to create thorough understanding about the design of F2012.
Furthermore, the technical director of Ferrari, Pat Fry even ruled out the likelihood of a podium finish in the season opener and asserted that they might struggle in the first few grands prix.
Nevertheless, Alonso performed inspiringly well even with the incompetent car and scored points with impressive consistency throughout the year.
The Spaniard led the drivers’ championship for quite a long time and had been considered as the strongest title contender. However, he faced unfortunate retirements in a couple of races due to which he lost some important points in the championship battle.
On the other hand, his main rival, Sebastian Vettel performed incredibly well with the fastest car in the field during the last few races and successfully claimed his third consecutive championship title by three points from Alonso.
Even though, the two-time world champion lost the championship to Vettel, but he has been declared as the most worthy driver for this year’s title by the majority of the team bosses in the annual pole by Autosport.
On the other hand, Alonso has said that despite a struggling start, this season has been perfect for him and it is going to be very difficult to keep up the level of consistency in the next year.
“You just have the feeling that some years you have done a good job and others when you feel there was something missing or something you wanted to change or want to improve for next year,” Alonso is quoted by Autosport. “I think it's been a perfect year.
It's going to be nearly impossible to repeat that in my career.”
“A worst start would be impossible. We were some 2.5 seconds off the pace in the Jerez test when the car made its debut, so it's nearly impossible that it will be worse, and so I expect a better start,” he added.
