Formula 1 teams pleased with FIA’s regulations
Top Formula 1 teams have praised the efforts of the sport’s governing body Federation Internationale de I’Automobile (FIA), which brought some new regulations, making the 2011 season exciting. The changes included the Drag Reduction System (DRS), Kinetic
Energy Recovery System (KERS) and the Pirelli tyres.
With the help of the DRS and KERS, the drivers have the opportunity to challenge their opponents, especially on a track which has longer straights. Both systems provide enough boost to the car, which helps in overtaking manoeuvres. Apart from that, a greater
wear rate of the Pirelli's has made things more interesting with the drivers pitting more than once unlike last year.
Renault’s team principal Eric Boullier stated, “The DRS was a cost-effective thing to put in place and on some layouts it will not work, like Australia, but when you have a straight long enough like Malaysia or China it will work and it is good.”
On the other hand, Ferrari’s driver Fernando Alonso claimed, “You need to keep pushing, and you need to keep saving the tyres as well. The race is very long. Last year after the first pit stop the race was more or less over, this year you don't know anything
until the last four or five laps and that is interesting.”
Team principal of Ferrari Stefano Domenicali stated that the race has become interesting if you are just a spectator. However, he claimed that the regulations have made it hard for the teams to make a strategy ahead of the race.
Red Bull’s team principal Christian Horner also agreed with the statement of Domenicali, saying that the new regulations have put a lot of pressure on the teams and drivers. Although there are a lot of complications, Horner was still pleased with the thrilling
outcome of the races in the season until now.
While most of the teams raised eyebrows over the degradation rate of the Pirelli's tyres, McLaren appreciated the efforts of the Italian manufacturers. Martin Whitmarsh, who is the team principal of the British team, said that the Pirelli did a fantastic
job in a very short time they had. He further added that things weren’t that bad, as most of the teams expected.
