Formula 1 teams should stick together to run the sport, says unnamed team boss – Formula 1 news
The Formula 1 Teams Association meeting was held in Istanbul on Sunday and one of the smaller team bosses has said that all the 11 teams showed unity for the first time which will be helpful in deciding the future of the sport.
Previously, Ferrari team boss Luca di Montezemolo urged the Formula 1 teams to be proactive about the sport’s future and said that Bernie Ecclestone does not hold the strings of the sports.
The FOTA meeting in Turkey revealed that the teams are eager to save the sport from a buyout. A statement from a smaller ranked team boss read as, “We had a FOTA meeting in Istanbul on Sunday and there was unprecedented unity among all 11 teams. This has
not always been the case in the past 20 years. In fact we have often lost out by not showing a united front.”
He added that the most important thing for the Formula 1 teams now is to show unity.
He further said, “What we talked about on Sunday was the idea of breaking away and running the sport ourselves. We feel the sport is being under-promoted. For example, in this day and age we should be making far greater use of new technology, such as the
internet and iPad.”
The top four teams of the Formula 1 arena Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes are going to sit and decide the future of the sport.
As the Formula 1 contract with the current owner CVC expires in 2011, Luca stated that the sport will have three options. First, to renew the contract, second, to run Formula 1 independently like the National Basketball Association in the US while the third
option Luca gave was to find a different partner for the sport which in this case will be EXOR.
For the first time, Formula 1 teams have stepped up for the survival of the sport and have shown some unity. Where does the struggle of the teams lead them, we will find out in a few days.
