Formula 1’s viewership increased after the 2010 Formula 1 season
After an exhilarating and dramatic 2010 Formula 1 season, it seems that Formula 1’s global television audience increased immensely to 527 million with growth in 9 out of 11 largest markets according to the official Formula 1 website.
Formula 1 had 520 million viewers in 2009 and there were only 17 races in the 2009 Formula 1 season while the 2010 Formula 1 season held 19 races. It is expected that the 2011 Formula 1 season will hold 20 races which is going
to be the longest season in the history of Formula 1.
It is believed that this is mainly because of the fact that the sport is flourishing immensely and as a result, the competition level in the sport is increasing. With new teams like Lotus Racing Team, Hispania Racing Team and Virgin
Racing Team, the fan following is increasing a lot as well.
Other than that, the since the number of races per season are increasing, the amount of venues is increasing as well, because of which countries like India and Korea are holding races, and in the near future, Russia is also going
to hold a race which would increase the sport’s viewership even more.
"It was a particularly strong year for Formula One's European audience, with many of FOM (Formula One Management)'s broadcast partners reporting their highest race audiences in a number of seasons," the website said.
One of the major developments in the sport’s television broadcast is going to be that Formula 1 will be broadcasted in HD (High Definition) for all sessions, i.e. the Friday practice sessions, Saturday morning test session, qualifying
session and race day.
It is going to be interesting to see what other plans Bernie Ecclestone comes up with later on this season.
As a sport, Formula 1 is expected to be even more competitive in 2011 since Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull Racing Team will be joined by Mercedes as well for the championship run. In 2010, it was quite entertaining to see how 5
drivers fought for the title until the very last race of the season. In 2011, it seems it is going to get even
more intense.
