Formula One 1 F1 drinks?

Why do all the drivers in F1 drink out of those weird bottles with the really long straws??

So it looks like I wasn't the only one asking the same question...

Those long straws have a purpose since they make it possible for the drivers to drink while they sit in the car and wait during practice and qualifying. Why do straws have to be so long you ask? Well, there's minimal space in the monocoque making it hard to grab the bottle and put it back on the side-headrests. So the bottle stays on the car while they just suck on the long straws =) ... you usually see those bottles on the cars when they film the pit. (They also loop up the straws when they're not in the car...)

If you use a regular drink bottle, wouldn't you have to lean your head backwards for the gravity to pull the water down the opening? You couldn't do that while you sit in the car, since the back of the headrest directly supports your head.

I mean, of course they could still drink out of a regular bottle while they're in the car, but why suffer if you're an F1 driver?

In short, it looks like those bottles are made for (F1) race drivers only. You can't buy them anywhere. In fact, I'm going to make my own Red Bull bottle with the same length of straw. You can join me and figure out a DIY!

Its often a glucose energy drink like red bull. The drink bottles in the car is just water.

Edit; probably a light hearted effort towards recycling but if you watch the race tomorrow, when the podium drivers go for the weigh in, they just drink out of normal mineral water bottles or red bull cans.

One word - sponsorship. They use these oversized bottles because they're paid to. A lot of the drivers seem to be sponsored by Red Bull whereas the McLaren drivers are sponsored by Nescafe.

That's wonderful world of Bernie's F1 $$$$$$$ extravaganza, if it can carry a sponsor logo inevitably it will.
