Formula One- 24 point lead is not so bad, Sebastian Vettel
The Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel insists that his teammate’s 24-point lead over him in the drivers’ standings looks worse than it really is.
After missing an opportunity in Hungary and crashing at the Belgian Grand Prix, the young German dropped to fifth place in the drivers’ standings and there were many rumours regarding him backing up Webber for the title chase. However, it seems Vettel is
not going to lean towards that option anytime soon, as he claims that if the championship were following the old points system, no one would be writing him off.
“Whether it's 24, 25 or 30, it doesn't matter. The new points system worries people more than it should. Now there are 25 points for a win, so under the familiar [old] system, I would only be 8 or 9 points behind. Then it would seem much less dramatic,”
Vettel told Bild am Sonntag.
He stated that he still has the full confidence in his abilities and believes he can win the championship, keeping in mind that there are just five races remaining in the 2010 season.
“We are not panicking; we are quietly doing our work. I believe in the title - that is the most important thing. It will be very close in the finale, but I'm optimistic,” he added.
Sebastian Vettel is currently in 5th place with 163 points after a finishing in fourth place at the Italian Grand Prix, behind Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso, who both are potential championship chasers. Jenson Button is currently in 4th
place with 166 points, a point behind Fernando Alonso with 167 points in 3rd place. Sebastian Vettel is just 24 points short of his teammate Mark Webber, who is leading the drivers’ standings up till now. The young driver has been very impressive,
since his debut but made some “amateurish” mistakes costing him some vital points. He was advised by many former drivers, as they all believe that Sebastian Vettel has the potential to become a world champion however, in order to do that, he will have to step
up his game and try to keep his nerve.
The Australian driver talked about this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix, and expects Red Bull to be the quicker team once again, as the track should suite the RB6.
“It's a high down-force street circuit that should suit our car. It's got some similarities to Monaco and Budapest, and we did well at both those circuits, so I'm hoping for a strong result,” the championship leader said.
Mark added that Formula 1 is yet to experience a wet night racing, running on a floodlit track, so it will be interesting if that happens.
Mark Webber is currently leading the drivers’ standings by 187 points after his closest rival Lewis Hamilton collided with the Ferrari of Felipe Massa’s rear tyre and broke his steering, leading to a retirement. Lewis is now 5 points behind Mark Webber with
182 points but hopes to strike back and take his lead back. However, Mark thinks different and believes that his Red Bull is stronger than the McLarens, and that he will be able to secure the title this year for the first time in his career. Mark Webber did
not have a highlight career until last year, when Red Bull started to climb to the top. The Australian finished in 4th place in the drivers’ standings last year with 2 wins, 8 podiums and a pole position. Webber has scored a total of 6 wins in his
8-year long career, and scored all 6 of his wins with Red Bull since last year. The Red Bull driver seems confident about his team, and he hopes to win both drivers and constructors’ titles with his team this year. Red Bull is currently leading the constructors’
standings with 350 points, followed by McLaren just 3 points behind them.
