Formula One: Alonso still clings tight to the hope for the title at Monza, Italian Grand Prix from 10th – 12th September 2010
Fernando Alonso came to Ferrari earlier this year amidst trumpet blast but the year had not been much like what was anticipated by the driver or his new team. The season has served a big share of ups and downs to the driver, however, Alonso is the kind of man who ‘could be defeated but not destroyed.
The two time Formula One champion leaped back in the title contention of the season with his first place finish in Germany, after several poor finishes and now he believes to stay there, among the forerunners till the end of the season.
Alonso is determined to stay optimistic, as he moves to Italy, at Monza on 12th of September.
The Spanish racer believes that the forth coming race could prove very critical for his already fading hopes for the title. It might turn to be a decisive race for further struggle of the season.
The last race of the season, held at Spa-Francorchamps had been very disappointing for him, as returning pointless at this part of the season could turn fatal for his title hopes. However, the first two practice sessions went very well but stars started fading behind the dark clouds of Spa at qualifying, as he finished down at 10th place. Later, the final race day further swept away his luck with heavy showers, as he contacted with Rubens Barrichello’s roaring Williams right at the first-lap. Next poor decision of the day was the early change of tyres and finally at Lap 38, the driver crashed out of the race, as rain returned on Belgian track.
Well, now as only six races of the season are left, Alonso stands 41 points shy of the championship leader, Lewis Hamilton, yet he has grasped all hopes tight, believing that the fight is yet not over.
“It seems that this year, the opening laps have not gone too well for me,” Alonso said, “In five races out of 13, I have found myself slipping to the back, either because of our own mistakes or because of circumstances beyond our control, as was the case in Belgium. I have always said - and I repeat it now - that in the course of the season, good luck and bad luck tend to balance one another out, so let’s hope that from now on it is payback time! The first final went badly, but there are still six to go.”
Now as three out of the six forerunners of Drivers’ Championship failed to score points at the last race, the chances for Spa-winner Lewis Hamilton of McLaren and Mark Webber of Red Bull, who ended second, have swollen immensely. Besides Alonso, Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button failed to score points and stand at third and fourth places respectively in the Championship.
Well, the Formula One caravan is ready to move forward for the next round for which Alonso says, “There is no denying that the Monza race will be very important.”
He was very ambitions as he added that the team would be doing all that is possible for them to make sure that nothing goes wrong on the final race day, as well as on the qualifying day.
He sounded very determined as he said that the team is not only striving for itself rather they want to perform good for all their fans in Italy, who still have high hopes and had been cheering them since the start of the season.
Well, not to forget here, Ferrari still has to know the verdict from World Motor Sport Council meeting that is to be held on 8th of September, regarding their team ordering controversy at the German Grand Prix.
