Formula One: Alonso’s victory may raise public outcry- says defending champion Jenson Button
Like many of the others in the sport, the McLaren driver, Jenson Button has also announced his concern that if Fernando Alonso wins the title by seven or lesser points it would be very disappointing.
At present, Alonso stands at the top of the Championship tally with his 246 points, followed by the Red Bull driver, Mark Webber who has 238 points under his belt. On the other hand, the second Red Bull driver, Sebastian Vettel holds the third place in the
charts with his 231 points, while Lewis Hamilton of McLaren chases him with his 222 points. With only one more race to go and just 25 points to play for the next race to be held tomorrow in Abu Dhabi, it is going to be very crucial and a sensational one.
Although, mathematically the chances of all the top four drivers are still alive, yet Alonso has a very clear dominance over all the others. He currently leads the charts with an advantage of eight points. While looking at the stats, the McLaren driver,
who is now out of the battle for the title, very clearly stated that if the Spaniard wins by seven points or lesser than this it would be a very disappointing thing not only for all the other racers and teams but also for the public.
By saying this, Button intends to point out the ‘unfair’ victory that the driver bagged at the German Grand Prix. As both the team drivers were heading for a 1-2 finish for the team, with Felipe Massa at the lead, he received a coded message from the team
saying that Alonso was faster than him. Following the note Massa slowed down, while his teammate overtook him to bag his second victory of the season.
Owing to this action of ‘team ordering’, a forbidden thing in Formula One, the German stewards penalised the team with a $100,000 fine. However, FIA did not take any further action on breaching of the rule, and no points were deducted for the act at the
last hearing of the case in September.
Now, as the season is heading for the last and final episode, Alonso needs to finish second at this weekend's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to assure his third world championship. In such a situation, Button believes that the Spaniard must do this by a dominance
of more than seven points to avoid disapproval from the Formula One fans as well as his fellow drivers.
While talking to the media earlier this week, the British driver said, "I just hope if he wins it then he does so by more than seven points. Some will be disappointed with what happened at Hockenheim and question whether he deserves it. I don't care
who wins it really.”
Furthermore, he added that he really appreciates the way the Red Bull Racing is giving an equal opportunity to both its drivers for a fair fight. He accepts the fact that decision might end up in a complete loss for the team as it increases the chances of
Alonso’s victory, yet he believes that this is what a fair game should be like.
He stated, “I like the way Red Bull let their drivers fight. That is the way it should be. You fight all the way through your career to get into F1, to get into a good car, to win races. If you still have a chance of winning the world championship, you
should be given equal opportunities and it is good to see they have said that is important.”
With only one a couple of more days to go when he would be no more the reigning champion, Button said, "I don't know who will win, it is very close. I'd say it is between Mark Webber and Fernando."
