Formula One: Chart toppers after the Singapore GP
Finally, the much anticipated fifteenth round of the season is over. The Marina Bay Street Circuit of Singapore embraced the race last Sunday amidst all the festivity and jubilation of the night race on this beautiful island. As already anticipated, the
two racing hours did not let the spectators blink even for a while as the roaring engines and flashing cars ramped at night on the illuminated track.
With this race, the tug for the title has further grown exciting and tight. The year had seen one of the most adventurous and never tickling battles as the Formula One arena is enchanted with five great combatants, equally competitive and highly concentrated
with fighting spirit and determination.
With only four more races to go, the five drivers at the apex, Mark Webber, Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button stand at a difference of only twenty five points, which was only twenty four before this last round.
Webber, the Red Bull driver leads the charts with two hundred and two points having bagged four race wins of the season.  The Australian driver has given a great racing show all through the season bagging his first race victory at the Spanish Grand Prix,
while the second was taken by him right at the next round, in Monaco. After seeing a podium and later a retirement, finally he grabbed victory at the British Grand Prix while his next conquer at the Hungarian Grand Prix made him the first driver to have won
four races this season, Alonso being the second after yesterday’s race.
At the Belgian Grand Prix, Webber ended at second place, behind Lewis Hamilton while three of the other top five drivers walked out pointless, suggesting that the final battle is now left only between Webber and Hamilton, however the chances of Webber stayed
the same, while the British driver’s fate is misty now.
Alonso returned as a spark at the middle of the season, while he has now turned into big blazing fire ball, threatening all other drivers. After having started the year brilliantly, he disappeared from the scene only to return with a loud roar at the German
Grand Prix. The controversial one-two finish of Ferrari in Germany pulled him back in the contention for the title and now Alonso stands as one of the most expected title winners which could be his third title of career. This week he aggressively pushed Hamilton
to third place while occupying the second radiantly.
Hamilton, after having a very brilliant season and being able to hold the top place of the Driver’s Championship most of the season, has now sunk down poorly. The last week’s race marks his third retirement in last four races which is a big shock for his
team as well as his fans. Currently, he has one hundred and eighty two points which have seen no swelling in last three races yet he is still hopeful that his chances are not completely gone.
The fourth and fifth places have been tugged and shoved between Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel and McLaren’s Jenson Button for a long time now.
Presently, Vettel holds fourth place with one hundred and eighty one points, as he had been able to stand seven times at the podium and has claimed two victories as well.
Button despite being quite consistent all through the season holds fifth place only. He has retired in two of the races; last time merely due to Vettel’s poor driving and so far has won two races as well. His difference of twenty five points from the charts’
leader though shrinks his possibility of winning the title yet the title defender is adamant to keep striving till the last race in Abu Dhabi.
Four more races to go and God knows how many more surprises are yet to be seen on the track. However, the season would always be remembered as one of the most nail biting and awe-inspiring one in decades.
