Formula One: Cosworth satisfied with return
The last year of the Formula 1 season saw the return of the Cosworth engines to the sport. After a three year absence from the sport, the British engineering firm returned supplying engines to four of the teams in Formula 1 season 2010.
The best thing for Cosworth was that they maintained their 100% reliability record in all the races. The Cosworth engines were supplied to Williams, HRT, Virgin and Lotus this season. All the four teams ran on the Cosworth engines for more than 100,000 kilometres
with no reliability issues. The engines also helped the Williams team to make steady progress throughout the season and eventually end up sixth in the constructor’s championship.
Apart from the engines, the firm also provided steering wheels to all the three new teams in the season this year. With 1,129 laps in all the 19 races of the season, the general manager of Cosworth, Mark Gallagher was pleased with the performance.
Reflecting on the performance of Cosworth, Mark said that all the objectives were achieved. The engines were supplied to one third of the total participating teams which were competitive, reliable and affordable at the same time. He said that the relationship
between Cosworth and their customers developed very nicely and they will be looking forward to providing competitive engines to the teams in the future. He said that the money was invested and the required profitability was achieved which would help them continue
their programme.
The engines were prepared in a very short time but the quality wasn’t compromised at all. The pre-season testing was successful and the teams were satisfied with the performance of the engines. There were some initial issues which were tackled and it didn’t
hinder the performance of the teams which reflects from a positive season.
The teams with the Cosworth engines were not able to have a great impact on the races. The main reason behind that were not the performance issues of Cosworth but it was beyond the control of Cosworth. There are many other aspects in the team’s performance
which include the chassis, vehicle dynamics and the aerodynamics which help the teams to finish better in the race.
It would be better to analyze the performance of Cosworth engines with the performance of Williams which was one of the top six teams in the season 2010. The team finished in points very regularly and one of the drivers also took a pole position in qualifying.
Williams is one of the very experienced teams amongst all the Formula 1 teams and the mix of experience and youth helped them to achieve some good finishes. Both the drivers, Rubens Barichello and Nico Hulkenberg performed well and made it through the Q3 in
the qualifying regularly.
The Cosworth team is looking forward to the season 2011. They are working hard with all the teams using their engines and hop to get positive results in the pre-season testing and eventually in the races in the season 2011. Cosworth is also expecting to
run the Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) version of the engine with the teams next year.
Cosworth is more seen as an engine providing company whereas it has more to offer than that. There is also electronic, aero scope and defence and automotive work being done at the Cosworth group but it is not known much by the public.
