Formula One: Fernando Alonso hopes to maintain the winning momentum at Spa Francorchamps and Monza
Fernando Alonso is looking forward to the next two races after a long summer break. The Grand Prix are particularly special venues and the Spaniard seems to be back on track and fresh after spending some time in Spain and Switzerland.
"I really want to get back on track, but in a positive sense, without any feeling of anxiety, but in a very calm way. I am happy that the return to racing means going to two particularly special venues which host the Belgian and Italian Grand Prix,” said Alonso on his Ferrari blog.
The 29 year old added that Spa is the most interesting track of the entire season, while Monza is going to be a very special track for him, as this will be the Spaniard’s first race there, as a Ferrari driver. Besides that, the circuit has played an important role in the history of motor sport.
Fernando Alonso joined the Formula One in 2001, with the team ‘Minardi’. Fernando was not able to score any points this year but his performance impressed the critics and viewers that earned him a spot in Renault. The team signed him for the year 2003 and this was the team’s best decision in its 18-year career. Alonso won his first race in his very first season with the team along with 4 podium positions and 2 pole positions. Fernando made an impressive performance that was highly appreciated by the critics, as his car was not even near the top running cars. The Spaniard won his first Championship in 2005 with 133 points with the help of 7 wins, 15 podiums and 6 poles. He was the first driver to beat Michael Schumacher in the drivers’ standings after his record-breaking reign of 5 years.
The 29 year old stayed with Renault for another year and dominated the season once again by winning the Championship with 134 points. Alonso had the honour of winning the championship during Schumacher’s high point in the Formula One. The Spaniard joined McLaren in 2007 and had another great season, as he finished 3rd in the drivers’ standings with 109 points. Fernando faced a lot of controversy during his time in McLaren; Fernando had to join Renault again before he could join Ferrari in 2010, as they did not have a free spot in 2009. Alonso is currently looking good and hopes to win the title as he is once again, in a strong car.
Alonso’s chances of the championship revived after his win and a second place at the German and Hungarian Grand Prix respectively. He hopes to continue his dominance at Spa and close in on the Championship.
"I have a good feeling following on from the positive results obtained in Germany and Hungary. As the saying goes, we have to keep the momentum and that should be our aim in Spa, to ensure we carry on the way we started just before the holidays,” said the former world champion.
Hockenheim and Budapest results boosted the team’s confidence and were important with respect to the standings in both championships. Alonso hopes the team keeps pushing like this and maintains the momentum after the summer break. Alonso 43 points in the past two races only including a win. Fernando has a total of 141 points that makes him 20 points behind the Championship leader, Mark Webber who has a total of 161 points. Alonso has a quite a chance to win the championship and expects his team to perform at its best in the last 7 races of the season. He has 4 other competitors ahead of him, namely Lewis Hamilton in 2nd place with 157 points; Sebastian Vettel in 3rd with 151 points followed by Jenson Button with 147 points. This season is getting better after every race. The Spaniard hopes to snatch the title for the 3rd time and it looks that the season will have an exciting end to it.
