Formula One: Ferrari must keep their feet on the ground – Lucas di Montezemolo
Ferrari will not underestimate its rivals Red Bull or McLaren in any way before heading into the final two rounds of the season, despite the fact that Fernando Alonso is now leading the drivers’ championship by 11 points after winning the Korean Grand Prix.
Both Red Bull drivers retired from Sunday’s race, while McLaren’s Jenson Button dropped out of the argument in the title race and Lewis Hamilton finished as the runner-up to Alonso.
Ferrari President Lucas di Montezemolo and team Principal Stefano Domenicali played down the significance of this result and told their team to stay focused until the end of the season as anything can happen in Formula 1 in a blink of an eye.
“Now we must keep our feet on the ground. The championship is still very open and we know we are up against very strong opponents. We will have to tackle the final two races with even higher levels of concentration, paying attention to every little detail,”
di Montezemolo said.
Domenicali called for a calm attitude but warned his team that the hardest work is yet to come as there are still two races remaining in this season that offer a maximum of 50 points. He thinks that if his team does not remain calm about Fernando’s lead,
the team might face some problems and lose focus.
This weekend was amazing for Ferrari, as the whole drivers’ standings situation turned around since Ferrari is in the strongest position when it comes to drivers’ standings currently. Domenicali believes that the team might even have a shot at the constructors’
title but that is quite a long shot.
Ferrari will have to work harder than ever now in order to maintain their lead. They must tackle their rivals with the same ferocious determination that the team has been fighting with in the second half of the season. Domenicali believes that nothing is
possible without determination and if the team does not face any reliability issues in the coming two races, they will win the title.
He stated that he was particularly wary of the Red Bulls, whose driver Mark Webber is currently in 2nd place behind Fernando Alonso.
“We are up against very strong opposition, especially in the shape of a team that has managed to take 14 poles from 17 races: to be in this position with just two races to go is already significant,” Domenicali added.
