Formula One: Finishing races will be supreme – Lewis Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton’s short-lived Italian Grand Prix ended on the opening lap after his McLaren’s front tyre collided with Felipe Massa’s rear tyre breaking the McLaren’s steering while trying to overtake the Ferrari. Lewis lost control of the car and went straight
at the first Lesmo. This was the second out of the past three races in which the British was not able to finish the race costing him vital points and the championship lead.
However, Lewis looks forward to the coming races as he is just 5 points behind the leader Mark Webber and his team is supporting him in every step. The 25-year-old hopes to take a second drivers’ title at the end of this season and claims that he has moved
on from his Monza disaster. The former world champion explained in an interview with the official Formula 1 website that he is now focused on making some improvements at the upcoming Singapore Grand Prix.
Lewis said that there is not much to say about the Italian Grand Prix now. These sorts of incidents are a part of Formula 1 but it is always disappointing because the adrenaline level drops in a matter of seconds after reaching its peak. It cuts short rig
when you are in the middle of the battle. Nevertheless, these things happen in the Formula 1 and this was not the first time the McLaren driver faced a retirement so he knew how it is.
Hamilton believes that he has the ability to cope with such disappointments, as he has had to face such situations before in his career and believes that the driver needs to soak up the lessons that need learning.
“You absorb that information, put the bad experience to one side, use the benefits and just move on”, he added. Lewis claims that he moved on the next morning and started to focus on the next race and methods to improve the car in order to assure a
good result at the Singapore Grand Prix. The team is still in a very good position and they need to capitalise on that.
The former champion thinks that trying to get the best performance out of the car is another thing as you can work on it forever and at some point, you will realise that you will have to get in the car and driver it in the end no matter how it is. The 25-year-old
felt that the low downforce setting on the car was not the best option after qualifying.
“Mainly, I needed less fuel than the high-downforce cars, because I was carrying less drag, and, most importantly, I had the potential to pick off cars on the straights, because of my top-speed advantage”, said Lewis. However, that was not guaranteed
of course, as he did not get to see how the car was working in the slipstream through the corners. Lewis believes that he would have done some passing if he had stayed in the race.
Lewis was glad that his team, especially his team Principal Martin Whitmarsh support him. The McLaren driver is aware that his team will always be there to back him up and support him in the most difficult of times so he does not have to ask them for anything
more. This enables a driver to feel bad after a bad result but gives a different sort of determination to perform better in the future.
The 25 year old had to non-finishes and one win in the past three races and it is not that bad. However, it does mean that Lewis lost some vital points to the other drivers and it affects his hunt for the title. He believes that these results are not enough
for him to win the title and he will have to keep pushing in order the win the championship. The team will have to take each race differently and make sure that the car is strong. Lewis vows to finish in the final five races of the season, as it will be the
most important thing for him now. He will go to the Singapore Grand Prix to win and regain his championship lead.
