Formula One: Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button looking to win at Silverstone
The current Formula One World Champion, McLaren’s, Jenson Button believes there is no more time left for complacency, and it’s time to start winning races again if he wants to defend his world title.
Jenson has only won 2 races this season; his last win came back in China. Button says that the new points system means that podium finishes make a significant difference when it comes to end of the season.
Button said that after all the tactics and strategies it comes down to winning races. He added that it is not different for any driver.
The McLaren driver said that there is such a difference in the one who wins the race. Even the two drivers behind him have such a drop in points that a race win is more important than ever before in F1.
FIA, the governing body of Formula One introduced the new points system in 2010 season. The aim behind the change was to encourage drivers to keep fighting for wins. Rather than focus on finishing in the top 3 consistently.
Nine races have taken place so far in the season at the half way point. Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel from Red Bull, Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button form McLaren and Ferrari’s Alonso have been the 5 race winners this season.
The 2008 Champion, Lewis Hamilton is leading the driver standings 6 points clear of Jenson Button his team mate. Hamilton has suddenly come up the table after 2 successive wins at Turkey and Canada.
Hamilton is looking to further his lead as McLaren gets ready to try out the updated cars at their home GP in Silverstone this weekend.
Hamilton said that the new updates in the car throughout the season have seen his car get better with every race. He is confident that Silverstone will be the race where he takes a significant lead at the top.
Hamilton said that since the Valencia GP the team has added further updates in the car that should suit the Silverstone track. But it is never a given that they will work exactly as anticipated and a lot will depend on the handling this weekend.
The British driver said that he feels the team has timed the changes perfectly and his car has gotten better with every race. Peaking at the right time is integral in a season with 18 races and he feels that is exactly what his team is doing.
Hamilton added that he enjoyed the 2 wins at Turkey and Canada but the home Grand Prix is always the most important, and it is almost as good as winning the World Championship.
Hamilton’s team mate, Jenson Button, has not yet been able to win the home GP, and said that he will do all he can to set the record straight. Button agreed with his team mate and said that the changes made to the car may prove to be crucial not just at Silverstone but till the end of the season.
Button added that the Red Bulls no doubt will once again be very quick while Ferrari with their new exhaust has also raised the bar. There will be a tough fight awaiting them this weekend at Silverstone.
Before the race there had been a number of speculations about the rift between the 2 British team mates. But McLaren have maintained that there is no truth in that and both of their drivers share a healthy relationship and the same objective.
