Formula One: Mark Webber confident of his championship chances at the British Grand Prix, Silverstone
Mark Webber the man in the news recently for his ugly accident at the Valencia Grand Prix, has said that he hopes to reaffirm his title challenge by winning his first British Grand Prix at Silverstone next weekend.
Webber says that Silverstone holds some extra prestige as far as F1 circuit around the world are concerned, it can also be called the Lord’s of F1 circuits.
He said that he has been doing quite well at Silverstone and does like the long straights there, he also added that after some near misses he finally believes that he can win his maiden race there.
The Red Bull driver currently lies in 4th position on the driver standing, but believes he still has a good chance of winning his first world championship. He said that the whole team including the pit crew has been working extra shifts to look into every minor detail to attain every single point that they can, because in the end even one point can make the difference.
The Australian driver is currently 24 points behind the championship leader Lewis Hamilton, and says he has recovered from the minor injuries he suffered at the crash in Valencia.
The 33 year old driver in an effort to overtake Heiki Kovalainen slammed into the back of his Lotus car and his car somersaulted in the air before landing upside down. Webber though walked away from it and says he is mentally and physically fully prepared for the next race.
The Red Bull driver said the only way to put behind a bad experience is to get back in the cockpit as soon as possible and come up with a good performance. Webber was disappointed that the crash at Valencia cost him dearly, as he could not even finish the race, which did hamper his chances of climbing up in the driver standings.
Webber said that Silverstone has been one of his favourite tracks; he said that he has had plenty of success there at different levels but in F1, he has not yet been successful at the British Grand Prix, and is keen to get the record straight.
Mark Webber added that now there are number of British teams in the sport, it will provide the local fans with great interest.
The weather at Silverstone is also very unpredictable, in previous seasons, it did rain in this, particular race but looking at the current weather in England, we may have a sunny day this weekend.
The Red Bull driver added that when he moved to Britain, Silverstone was the first track he went to, and it is sad that he has not been able to register a win here yet.
When he was asked that if he was still hopeful of winning the world championship, Webber said that off course he has every chance of winning the title this year, and considering the car he has this season he does have a very good chance.
On a lighter note Webber said that, just before the Valencia Grand Prix an American reporter in an interview said that Webber you have been quite brilliant this season, he said you have led most led most of the laps, and finished every race with points and also more times than not have finished on podium. Webber said he told him that he had done a great job at jinxing his race and so it proved.
But Webber added that he is not superstitious and believes in hard work rather than luck, and is confident that there is enough time left in the season for him to go for the title.
