Formula One: Mark Webber needs just another race win
The Red Bull driver, Mark Webber believes that he needs to win another race now as podiums are not enough to ensure his victory at this stage of the season.
The Australian driver, though currently leads the Drivers’ Championship yet he has not finished any race at the top place since his last victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix. On the other hand, his other three closest competitors, Fernando Alonso, Sebastian
Vettel and Lewis Hamilton, have bagged one victory each in the last three races. However, Webber has ended thrice on the podium in last four races held in Belgium, Italy, Singapore and Japan, but now this would not be sufficient to stay at the top.
Currently, he has an advantage of 14 points from his teammate, Vettel and the Ferrari driver, Alonso as both have 206 points and stand at third and second places respectively. If Webber keeps finishing at second places like the past few races, he would soon
lose his dominance over the charts.
For the 34 year old driver, this is the first time during his Formula One career when he stands so close to victory. Such a tight battle, from the leading position, has never been fought by the driver ever before. Though many believe that his teammate is
more deserving for the top place as compared to him, yet the Australian has shown a lot of determination all through the season and is adamant to keep doing the same till the end of the year.
Now, as the driver returned from the last round in Japan he talked to the press saying, "I need to win again in the future." He further added,
“I'm very confident I can do that, and that would be beneficial, of course, but also reliability can still yet play a role, many things, circumstances, lots of different things. There are 75 points to go. Obviously these guys have a bit less because they're
a few behind, but in the end, confident."
Webber has been the most consistent driver all through the season, while his closet competitors have kept changing from race to race. Till the German Grand Prix, Weber and the McLaren driver, Lewis Hamilton were thought to be the biggest rivals while Vettel
and the other McLaren driver, Jenson Button kept following them. However, the German Grand Prix revived Alonso’s hopes for the title, while the last few races slipped Hamilton down to fourth place in the Drivers’ Championship. Now the victory of the last race
in Japan has revitalized Vettel, who is expected to give the toughest time to his teammate in rest of the three races.
Webber smiled as he added now, "Two weeks ago it was Lewis, and then it was Fernando," he said.
"It's chopping and changing, but the most important thing is that the gap is going the right way. I need to keep it like that.”
The season is yet to see three more rounds, the next one to be held in South Korea next weekend, while the last two are scheduled to take place in Brazil and Abu Dhabi.
At present, while the charts leader expresses his hopes, the other top men in the charts’ tally also seem pretty confident and motivated. At this stage of the season, one race win by any of the top drivers could completely turn the tables.
Yet Webber’s top position and a lead of 14 points is a big advantage for him, and if he manages to win a single more race, he could be successful in bagging his first World Championship.
