Formula One: Mark Webber should have kept his secret- Flavio Briatore
Flavio Briatore, the manager of the Red Bull driver, Mark Webber believes that the racer should not have revealed his shoulder injury after the season ended.
As the season came to an end, Webber published a book which exposed his shoulder injury that never came to the media earlier that season. The book told that the driver competed in the last four races of the season with a fractured shoulder. He further insisted
that this never affected his racing therefore he chose not to speak about it to the team or the media. It was further told in the edition that he received the injury, during a cycling expedition a little time ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix.
As the news was released and got immense media attention, Webber’s team manager, Christian Horner was taken by surprise. He told the media that the act was an irresponsible one on the driver’s part. The Austrian stated, "I didn't even know about the
book, let alone the shoulder. It is obviously disappointing that Mark said nothing. It was an injury that did not appear to have any effect on his performance but all the same it would have been nice to know about it. Our drivers have an obligation to make
sure they are fit." Webber met a similar accident before the beginning of the 2009 season when he fell off while cycling at a hilly area.
Recalling some recent incidents, the driver’s manager, Briatore stated that it would have been wise of Webber to never speak about the incident or he should have reported it to the team right at that time.
During the last four rounds of the season, Webber lost dominance of the points’ tally and slipped down to third place from the top. On the other hand, his teammate, Sebastian Vettel rose to glorious victory at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, becoming the youngest
world champion ever in Formula One.
Briatore, although continues to manage the driver, has the view point that Webber could have bagged the championship easily but made several mistakes all through the year. He added that the worst of his errors was seen at the Korean Grand Prix, which cost
him his championship.
While talking to the media earlier today, Briatore who also manages the two times world Champion, Fernando Alonso of Ferrari said,
"It would have been better to leave it with no excuses at all, or to have said it when it happened. The truth is that Mark lost the championship only because of the mistake in Korea. Otherwise, he would be champion."
