Formula One: McLaren promise full support for the 2009 champion, Jenson Button
Formula one 2010 season has just 2 more races left and yet there are 5 possible candidates for the World Championship. Although if one takes a look at the driver standings it would be clear that it has to be a head on fight between Fernando Alonso of Ferrari,
Mark Webber of Red Bull and Lewis Hamilton of McLaren. These 3 drivers are on the top of standings respectively, however defending champion Jenson Button and Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull have also not given up hope of winning the title. Button is currently
on 5th place trailing Fernando Alonso by massive 42 points, while Vettel is on 4th place 25 points adrift of the Spaniard.
Earlier there were suggestions that McLaren would be putting all their weight behind the 2008 champion Lewis Hamilton as he is now in 3rd place. But the team has made it clear that they would offer all their support to both drivers, and Button
would have all the assistance he needs from the team as he tries to defend his world title in Brazil.
Jenson Button won his world championship with Brawn GP last season, and moved to McLaren Mercedes this year. However things have not gone according to plan and his hopes of retaining the title now look quite slim.
Martin Whitmarsh the team boss at McLaren said that Button has not given up hope, and intends to fight till the end, so the team is firmly behind him. Whitmarsh added that when they signed Jenson Button they knew they are bringing in a driver who will always
give the team his all, so it really is no surprise for them. He added that Button is a champion and that is exactly the attitude of a champion to fight till the end.
Jenson Button after the Korean Grand Prix said that, one can never give up till the final chequered flag is waved. The Brit while talking to the media said that although the chances are slim, but he is in the sport to compete and win so that is what he is
going to do. Button went on to say that just as we witnessed in Korea the 2 Red Bull drivers were not able to finish the race. So one can never be sure who will and who will not finish the race, plus if one takes into account the new points’ system one win
can really change things.
The 2009 champion said that Brazilian circuit does hold some fond memories for him, he said that he won his maiden championship there last season and who knows maybe it would once again bring him luck. Button went on to say that yes it is a stretch right
now to believe that all things would go his way and he would be back in top 2 or so, however that does not mean that he should give up the chase. The McLaren driver went on to say that until the championship is mathematically impossible for him to win, he
would continue to give it his all and hope for the best.
Fernando Alonso of Ferrari is leading the points’ table after the Korean Grand Prix with 231 points. Behind him is Mark Webber of Red Bull with 220 points, Lewis Hamilton once again got himself back in the title race with a 2nd place finish in
Korea and is no on 3rd place in the table. The 2nd Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel is on 4th and the only title contender who has not been able to top the table throughout the season, despite 9 pole positions in qualifying
he has managed just 2 wins.
