Formula One News: Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso says title race is not yet over
The two-time F1 World Champion Fernando Alonso has said that there is still a long way to go in the season, and he is not giving up the race for the world title.
Alonso had an unfortunate race at Belgium this weekend, and he was eliminated from the race when his car spun. He did not finish the race and is now trailing the championship leader Lewis Hamilton by 41 points. There are still 6 races to go in the season, and he believes that he has enough time to catch up to his former teammate.
Alonso, while talking to a news channel, said that he is confident that there is still a significant chance for him to catch up to Hamilton.
Alonso said that there are still 150 points to be taken in the championship. That is more than enough to turn the odds in his favour. The Spaniard said that he just has to remain calm and work hard on his end, and make use of the opportunities that come his way in the last 6 races.
The former McLaren driver said that he would reignite the title race at the Italian Grand Prix. It would be the home race for Alonso’s team Ferrari; the race will take place on the 12th of September. He said that there would be added pressure because it’s the home Grand Prix for his team, but added that by no means would it be a make-or-break weekend as far as the title is concerned.
The Spaniard said that there is no denying the fact that the Grand Prix at Monza would go a long way towards determining who wins the title this year. However, there still is more to the title story then what has gone by. He reiterated that due to the new points system, every race is significant and all he has to do is keep his ends covered and do his best.
Fernando Alonso said that at the home GP, there would be pressure but also the home-side advantage and he would use the advantage to drive home the points. He added that a great result in Italy would go a long way towards reigniting his title challenge.
Alonso said that if things do not go as planned in Italy, then it would be difficult to chase down Hamilton, but added that it still would not be the end of it.
Fernando was the fastest on the tracks during practice at the Belgian Grand Prix, but failed to make use of it on qualifying.
On race day, Williams’ driver Rubens Barrichello ran into Alonso’s car in damp conditions. He recovered well to make his way back in the race, but spun out in the 40th lap and did not manage to finish the race.
Alonso, while reflecting on the race, said that the incident on the first lap was very detrimental. He added that he had to go into the pits early and that pretty much changed the whole race for him.
The two-time world champion said that the unwanted incident could have been avoided, but the rain made sure that he was not able to make up ground and eventually could not finish the race.
Alonso said that in the course of a season, there is enough good and bad luck, so in the end it does balance itself out. Therefore, he has no regrets and knows that all he has to do is keep working on his end and hope that everything falls into place.
