Formula One News: Sergio Perez signs with BMW Sauber for 2011
After a long struggling year, BMW Sauber finally have hope for the upcoming 2011 season. The car practically drove white on the track all through the season due to not having any sponsors. However, now they have settled for
some sponsorship for next season, as Escuderia Telmex has announced their backing for the forthcoming year. The news was coupled with another more special one for race followers and that was the induction of Sergio Perez in the team for 2011.
The Mexican driver is currently racing in the GP2 Series and has wrapped up the season successfully by finishing in second place. Among the four races that he managed to win this year is the challenging and tough course of
Monaco.
Perez will be the companion of current team driver Kamui Kobayashi, who is already signed with the team for next season.
The 20 year old would be making his debut with Formula One at the season opener - the Bahrain Grand Prix - next year in the month of March.
While addressing to the media after the announcement, the driver happily exclaimed that being a part of the Formula One squad is a dream of every young driver and now it’s time for his to come true. He continued saying that
this wish brings along a big challenge and responsibility also, and he is well aware of this fact.
He further added that this day is not only a great one for him but also a proud moment for his countrymen as he has been selected for the highest ranking motor racing series.
He concluded by saying, “I would like to thank Peter Sauber for the faith he’s shown in me and I’ll do everything I can to make the most of this wonderful opportunity.”
As Peter Sauber, the team owner, talked to the media earlier today, he proudly proclaimed that, “Sergio has been on a continuous upward curve over the past few years. He demonstrated his fighting spirit in races over the course of last season and proved that
he’s ready to take the step up into Formula One. I look forward to working with him and am in no doubt that, in Sergio Perez and Kamui Kobayashi, we will have a strong driver pairing.”
With these and some other major changes in the team, BMW Sauber hope to have a much better season ahead for them after going through a tough 2010 season.
