Formula One; “Nothing but the best of everything” - Sir Stirling Moss
FIA has come up with a number of changes in its regulations before the teams move for the 2011season. Although 60 years have already gone, the sport is still in a continuous evolution phase. Every passing year teaches new lessons to the organisers, and brings
new ideas to better entertain the fans and keep Formula One ahead of all the other racing series of the world.
While talking about the changes introduced for the upcoming season, Sir Stirling Moss believes that most of these are good ones and will show some very positive impacts in next season.
He started off saying that the strict stance taken by FIA on the dirty driving by Michael Schumacher earlier this year is a very good sign. He believes that over the years, Formula One has proved to be one of the safest racing sports while the German, at
the Hungarian Grand Prix, did a very poor thing for a man of his calibre. The 41-year –old pressed his former Ferrari teammate, Rubens Barrichello against the pit wall so fiercely that the action could have turned fatal for Barrichello had he not been such
an experienced driver, or had there been a car coming out of the pits.
Keeping the 7-time world champion’s act in mind, FIA has announced a clear set of rules for ‘dirty driving’ that may risk any other car or driver. As per the new rules the on-track behaviour has become a part of the sporting regulations, and the stewards
have been authorised even further to punish drivers who misbehave during the race.
Moreover, while talking about lifting of the ban on ‘team orders’, Moss said, "It's stupid that they ever had to make a ruling on it. Team orders were always there and they always will be, and I think they always should be."
He furthermore commented on the return of KERS and the launch of moveable rear wings believing that both will help create more thrill in the sport, and the fans will be more entertained than ever before. He explained saying, "I'd like to hope that this coming
year is going to be even better than last year, and I think last year was one of the best seasons we've seen for a long time," he said. "With all these changes the driver input, it would seem to me, is going to be much higher than in previous years. I think
that's a good thing because the driver input has been cut down so much that two seconds can cover the whole field [excluding the new teams] which is unreal."
KERS was already present in the sport but after 2009 it was banned due to its high cost. However, Moss says that allowing KERS is not only good for the sport but also it is very essential for the development of the auto sport world.
He told the reporters, "I'm very pro KERS because I think in 10 or 15 years it will be on every road car. You're getting something for nothing and that's always a good thing. Racing is the best environment to prove and test things before they go to the public
- like disc brakes which I was connected with when I was racing. There's no doubt that the teams will find out a tremendous amount about the technology as they use it."
While defending the added cost of the system Moss stated that although it is expensive, but when it comes to Formula One, it's difficult to think of teams that do not have money. He said that the series is all about spending big amounts and this is how the
teams have turned it over the years. He concluded saying that Formula One, in everyone’s mind is nothing but the best of everything.
