Formula One: Pirelli tyres will show unpredictable race results- Pedro de la Rosa
The Pirelli test driver, Pedro de la Rosa predicts a lot more excitement and thrill in the 2011 Formula One season. After his return from the wet rainy tyre testing with the Italian rubber company, the driver is confident that Pirelli will make racing much
more interesting than ever before.
It is also reported that on special instructions from FIA the new tyre wear is not made as hard as the earlier Bridgestone’s was. This means there will be two or three pit stops per race next season, unlike last year’s single stop for tyre change. Pit stops
make the race more interesting as drivers also have to balance the tyre wear along with racing, while each stop can further bring dramatic change in the positions of the drivers.
De la Rosa has been working with Pirelli since the middle of the 2010 season, when he was dropped from his team, Sauber, last year. While talking to the reporters, he said that the tyres have improved immensely over the last few months to suit the Formula
One requirements. He stated, "The races will be more interesting, because they have designed a tyre for the show - especially the super soft which is very fast but also has a very big degradation."
He reckons that the new rubber will make the upcoming season more unpredictable as “2 or 3 stops per grand prix” can bring a new the race winner at every other track. He said that the results of every round will be "more open" than ever before.
However, he dismissed all the rumours that the introduction of new tyres, in addition to the return of KERS and the new adjustable rear wings will make qualifying less significant than earlier it was. He explained saying,
"Qualifying will always be 70% of the outcome of the race. Of course, it is true that the difference between the first and the second choice of compounds is very large. So those who start further back than eleventh will have a chance to fight for points
because the harder tyre will last much longer than the soft. But that's only speculation."
The teams will be testing the Pirelli tyres at the first pre-season test, which is scheduled to begin on February 1, in Valencia and will continue for three days. The second test is to be held on February 10, at Jerez and will also be carried for another
three days.
