Formula One: Point standings after Valencia, Lewis Hamilton and McLaren on top
The Formula One caravan's latest stop was Valencia. The ninth race of the 2010 Formula One season, the European Grand Prix, took place here in Valencia, Spain, on Sunday, June 27. The cars roared around the track of Valencia, as the furious drivers battled at the sport arena, ready to crush anything that came in their way. Amidst the warm winds of the harbour, the combat began as the growling engines chased each other.
Sebastian Vettel of the Red Bull team was the lucky man to bag the victory. Since the start of the race he had been able to keep his position at the front of the pack. With his Valencia victory he has achieved a position at the third slot in the Drivers’ Championship for this season.
After the last two races Vettel was somewhat out of the top ranks of the Driver’s Championship. Till the Turkish Grand Prix things were going pretty smooth for the Red Bulls. A crash at Istanbul resuted in Vettel’s retirement from the race whereas his team mate Mark Webber finished in third place.
Now after Vettel’s Valencia victory, Red Bull have emerged as the forefront competitors once again. For Vettel this is the second victory of the season, previously he won the Malaysian Grand Prix, the third race of the year. Currently, Vettel stands at the third place of the Drivers’ Standings with a total of one-hundred and fifteen points.
Lewis Hamilton, of McLaren, the winner of the last two races had been able to end at the second place and had been successful in keeping his position safe at the top of the current Drivers’ charts, with a total of one-hundred and twenty-seven points. His team mate Jenson Button catches his tail for the third consecutive time. In the previous two races McLaren had a 1-2 finish for the team and this time Button had been able to follow Hamilton again for third place. That marks his second place in the season’s Drivers’ standings with a total of one-hundred and twenty points. The twosome have stuck together to keep their teams’ position secure at the peak of the Constructor’s Championship, as McLaren stands proud with a total of two-hundred and forty-eight points.
The driver who ended at fourth place in Valencia Grand Prix is Rubens Barrichello. He had been the true warrior this weekend, as he had been able to beat the mighty autos like Ferrari and Mercedes. Now he stands at eleventh place with a total of nineteen points.
Robert Kubica of Renault, who had not been able to bag any victory the entire season, has finished at the fifth place once again, making his final standing of the season at the sixth place with eighty-three points under his belt. The Force India driver, Adrian Sutil was fast enough to end at the sixth place while his team mate Vitantonio Liuzzi, the Italian driver finished at sixteenth place whereas the team now stands at the sixth slot in the Constructors’ Standing after the European Grand Prix.
The seventh place was occupied by Kamui Kobayashi of Sauber whereas the other Sauber driver, Pedro de le Rosa, had been able to end at the twelfth place with a total of eight points for the team that stands at the ninth position overall.
Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso, who finished third in Canada, ended at the eighth place in Valencia. Sebastien Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari of Toro Rosso finished at ninth and thirteenth places respectively.
Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg who had been able to clock the fastest lap in qualifying, ended at tenth place whereas his team mate Michael Schumacher ended at fifteenth place. This race was very important for Schumacher as he had not been able to perform since the start of the season and especially after the last race in Montreal he faced heavy criticism for his poor driving. With this result Mercedes has declined to fourth place and Schumacher’s hopes for a Championship are next to impossible.
The nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first positions went to Timo Glock, Brunno Senna and Jarno Truilli of Virgin, HRT and Lotus respectively.
Overall, the race had again been fruitful for the McLarens whereas the Red Bulls suffered from Mark Webber’s crash. Hamilton still leads the Drivers’ Standings and his team McLaren leads the Constructors’ Standings.
