Formula One Racing news: Mark Webber defends Red Bull's front wing design concept
The Red Bull car handed to Mark Webber in the championship is being placed under the microscope. The front wing design concept of the Red Bull car is being questioned due to its performance. This design has resulted in Webber performing at his optimum in high speeds, whereas other cars remain relatively static.
Mark Webber, in his statement to the press, cleared the air, and assured the audience that the Red Bull car has always passed stringent FIA testing. "When people don't like what they see on the stopwatch, they have to justify their own positions sometimes,” he added.
Following his podium finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix, 33-year old Mark Webber leads the championship standings, surpassing McLaren's Lewis Hamilton by just four points.
He also commented on how hard his team had worked together to create a car designed to meet all of the Formula 1 rules and regulations. The car's prime performance is at high speeds, which allows the driver leverage over other cars. Rival racers would object and scrutinize every detail to allow room for questions, as they have nothing else left to give to the race. He said that performance and tactics are what allows you to win a race and if both are not there, then you have to find a third route.
“Some teams have done certain things; other teams have done other things. McLaren incorporated the F-duct, which is a sensational idea. We've turned the world upside down to try and do that, which is not without resource difficulties - but that's Formula 1.We're more than happy with what we have on the car, and we're sleeping well at night. You should never penalise things that are ingenious, and people who are doing a good job. There's always something new to bring out of the cupboard," said the Australian.
Ferrari has been among the list of teams who have created the concept of a front wing; this has also been cleared by the FIA, but there have been many complaints against the use of such a design concept in the race.
Ross Brawn of Mercedes has stated that FIA tests are not up to date and they do not give the 'correct' result at all times. Martin Whitmarsh of McLaren has said that it was tough to imagine how the race cars could be allowed to have wings and how it could be deemed legal.
The Belgian Grand Prix on August 29 will witness toughened and more in-depth tests to assure that all of the teams have a fair chance of winning the race.
Red Bull's earlier design of the exhaust blown diffuser was criticized and looked down upon; however, after the tests were cleared, other teams took this as a chance to include the same designs on their cars for a crisper performance.
Webber wants the Red Bull car to gain more equality with other cars in relation to their engines, as Mercedes, McLaren and Force India all have a high horsepower, even though their engine is not in line with their rivals. Red Bull does not have a very powerful engine in comparison with others in the race, and they have been working extra hard to gain on their engine’s performance.
