Formula One - Schumacher believes he can still win a race
The return of the seven times world Champion, Michael Schumacher to the track earlier this year created an unmatched hype and enthusiasm among his followers. People embraced his decision with joy and excitement waiting to see the drama, action and magic unfold on the track as he had always been able to do earlier during his career.
However, as the season unfolded things changed their shape. The same fans and pundits who anticipated seeing him race again after a gap of three years started considering his decision of returning as a ‘big mistake.’
The German announced his retirement in 2007 only to return back to the track after a period of three years. However, since his return, the heroic racer had not been able to end a single race on the podium though he still insists that his comeback was not a mistake, he explains by saying, “because I enjoy what I'm doing and because I believe in being able to reach my goal - to win the title."
While talking to the official Formula One website, he said that a return always demands time. He admitted the fact that there were higher expectations from him which, unfortunately, he had not been able to meet, however he told that he was still optimistic about his chances for the upcoming season.
He explained this by saying that the team has many experienced people and they simply know and completely understand their shortcomings.
Earlier this year, Jenson Button who won the title of last year with Schumacher's current team Mercedes GP called Brawn GP, explained that he feels himself to be somewhat responsible for Schumacher's despair as he had moulded the Mercedes car to suit himself. Schumacher as well as the team agree with him yet they are hopeful that things would be better next year as they had already started working on their car for the forthcoming season.
The two most influential people of Formula One and very old friends Michael Schumacher and Bernie Ecclestone, the Formula One supremo talked to the Formula One Official website together where the latter defended the driving icon saying, "When people say that Nico Rosberg is faster than Michael I tell them Nico still has to prove himself. Not so Michael. For Nico fourth places are still important - not for Michael. Only winning is what counts for him. Whether he finishes fourth or 14th doesn't really matter for him. Let's be serious, why should he push to the limit for fourth places?"
However, Schumacher describes his season in quite a different manner saying that he has always driven at the limit. The 41-year-old also accepted the fact that his teammate Nico Rosberg is doing great and he feels happy for him.
He further expressed that may be he is not getting the best out of his car so far especially in qualifying. However, he said that the year had taught him some good lessons and that he is hopeful that they would be helpful for the team for their further performances.
Schumacher also confessed that he never thought he would be able to snatch away seven World titles, and now he has come to know that it was due to the team around him that provided him with such a great car.
Out of the total seven wins five were taken by the phenomenal driver while he was with Ferrari. He was able to claim all the championships from 2000 to 2004.
He concluded saying, that he had always loved the way things had gone with him in the past and would love to see that repeat in the future as well, as he does not feel any difference in his skills and spirit over the years.
