Formula One: The Korean Grand Prix – A controversial highlight
Finally, the wait is over as the Korean grand prix is set to take place in a week’s time. After a controversial acceptance of the track just 2 weeks before the grand prix was supposed to take place, the track finally got the FIA’s approval and since then,
the critics are giving the stewards a tough time.
The Korean track was still under progress when the FIA accepted to add it in the 2010 calendar thanks to the beloved CEO of the FIA Bernie Ecclestone. The track is still having some minor additions before the grand prix takes place this weekend and many
believe that the FIA has been very lazy and stubborn regarding this matter.
Firstly, since the track’s construction had to be delayed due to bad weather, why did not the FIA just let it go? Why are they so desperate to add more tracks to the calendar when they do not even match Formula 1’s standards? One can believe that the Korean
track might just meet the sport’s standards but the way it was cleared by the FIA after the inspection was very immature and unprofessional.
According to the rules of the FIA regarding track approval, a track must be approved at least 60 days before the grand prix is expected to take place. The track is barely completed and the grand stands are still under construction.
The question is, why is the FIA jumping like a kangaroo after money and new venues? The 80 year old lunatic Bernie Ecclestone is thinking of introducing even more new venues to the Formula 1 calendar. What is wrong with him? If he paid more attention to
the Korean track rather than spend his time on mindless ideas like the African Grand Prix, the current situation would have been completely different right now.
The teams are obviously not happy with the current situation either as they are forced to race on a track they have never seen before and was confirmed to take place on such a short notice. On the other hand, if the Korean Grand Prix did not take place,
the teams would have been even more furious as they planned their whole season for a 19 race season. Since McLaren and Ferrari are fighting for the drivers’ title and they need to gain some ground, they could have even sued the company for misleading the teams
and the fans.
The Korean Grand Prix is the 3rd last race of the 2010 season and it will play a vital role in this year’s championship since the competition is pretty much neck-to-neck. The top 5 drivers are separated by just 31 points with the two McLaren drivers
in 4th and 5th place. The two Red Bull drivers are leading the championship as Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel are in 1st and 2nd place in the drivers’ standings respectively.
The Korean International circuit is expected to be a mixture of speed and technicalities but grandpa Bernie just did not give the team’s enough time to visit or study the tracks in order to improve their simulation programs for the track.
Seriously, what is Bernie Ecclestone even doing in the FIA at the age of 80? Isn’t he supposed to raise his grandchildren in this age and tell them stories about snow white and the 7 Bernies? It is about time that someone should do something about him as
he is getting way over his head with ideas like introducing a handful of venues before 2014.
This is Formula 1 grandpa, not a garage sale. Formula 1 is the most watched motorsport and it has a standard. Things are not looking good at the moment since the sport is under financial threat and with ideas like this; the established track’s organizers
are also getting frustrated and Bernie will lose everything if he does not keep a balance between the traditions and the progress of Formula 1.
