Formula One: Williams and BMW Sauber take the battle to Singapore Grand Prix
The two teams have struggled this season as compared to the past couple of years. Williams is currently in 7th place with 47 points, while BMW Sauber is in 8th place with 27 points in the constructors’ standings. The teams will take
the battle to the Singapore Grand Prix this weekend.
Rubens Barrichello from Williams loves the Marina bay and believes that the Singapore Grand Prix offers an experience like none other. The circuit is fairly a typical street track and makes it more interesting for the Brazilian. Marina bay is a challenge
for the engineers as it is not easy to find the best set-up but this makes it more exciting as it is interesting to watch how every team experiments with its cars. There are some overtaking points in the track namely turn four and the end of the lap. Teams
run different strategies enabling the drivers a chance to gain positions. The drivers suffered with the light last year but that is fixed now and driving at night makes it quite similar to watching TV. The 38-year-old loves driving at the Marina bay and hopes
to have a competitive race this weekend. Rubens finished in 6th place after starting 9th on the grid last year.
His teammate Nico Hulkenberg will have his first Singapore Grand Prix and is feeling confident after a good result at Monza. He is getting a hang of the FW32 than he was at the start of the season and hopes to convert this comfort into a point scoring ability.
This will be his first night race in the Formula 1 and believes that he will get used to it as he has been practicing the track using a simulator. Nico drove a night race in GP2 Asia in 2009, so driving under the floodlights will not be a new experience for
him. He believes that there is no difference driving-wise but adjusting to the timings is a problem, as the drivers go to bed in the middle of the night and wake up midday.
“I'm sure it will be exciting. Everybody speaks very positively about this race, many people say it is the highlight of the year, so I really just want to go and find out for myself,”
he said.
Their rivals BMW Sauber were equally excited about the coming race and they believe that they will prevail with Nick Heidfeld on their side.
Nick Heidfeld loves driving at the Singapore Grand Prix even though he was not able to finish the race last year. Nick is extremely excited, as this will be his first race in the 2010 season with BMW Sauber after his return. Marina Bay immediately became
one of his favourite tracks two years ago and he believes that the city is quite demanding. He can hardly imagine how the circuit will suite the cars this time, as he has not driven the car yet but according to the previous results, the car should perform
better at Singapore as compared to Monza. He was happy regarding the matter that he can probably use his last year’s seat and this will save the team a lot of work making the German more comfortable. He is looking forward to spending some time with James Key
and his teammate Kamui Kobayashi. “It will be interesting to see how the situation with the bumps has developed. In this regard, the track got worse from 2008 to 2009 and it was said this would be sorted out. The atmosphere at this night race is simply
massive,” said Heidfeld.
His teammate on the other hand will race at his first Singapore Grand Prix in the Formula 1. The Japanese driver tested the track using the simulator. He attended the track for two year as a reserve driver for Toyota, so he has looked around Singapore and
the track. It is quite a long track as compared to other city tracks and the atmosphere during the race is great. Kamui drove at a night race in Qatar during his time in GP2 Asia and finished fourth in that race. This is one of the best tracks for the spectators
and BMW will have a good race here. “I must admit I would really like to have a good result in my pocket when we head to my home grand prix in Suzuka. It is exciting to get a new team mate during the season and I’m curious about working with Nick,”
he said.
