Formula One driver Robert Kubica considers himself ‘lucky’ after horror crash
Renault driver Robert Kubica considers himself ‘very lucky’ following his crash during the Ronde di Andora rally earlier this month.
He crashed his Skoda Fabia 2000 into a guard rail before ending up in a church wall. The Polish driver suffered multiple injuries, including a partially severed right hand and has undergone three major operations.
Speaking to the media about his recovery Kubica said he was thankful his situation is not worse “I know I'm not in good shape, but I consider myself very lucky. I am facing a long and difficult rehabilitation, but I am not worried about that.”
Robert Kubica has started his long run towards rehabilitation; he is not expected to be fully fit for at least a year.
The Santa Corona’s Spinal unit Chief, Antonino Massone admitted that Kubica’s journey towards recovery will be long. He noted that there is a risk of infection for which he will have to be treated with antibiotics.
Kubica’s manager Daniele Morelli added, “The doctors and physiotherapists, for him, are like the engineers at Renault; adjusting, modifying and correcting the machine for the best result.”
The 26-year old is eyeing a mid-season return, but it is highly unlikely. There is also the possibility that he may never race again, to which he replied optimistically “Look! I can move my forefinger.”
The Pole has been replaced at Renault by ‘Quick Nick’ Nick Heidfeld for the start of the 2011 season. The German who impressed the management during the Jerez test session where he posted the fastest time on the grid on his first outing. Vitantonio Liuzzi and Renault test driver Bruno Senna were also in the running for substitute driver for the Pole.
The 2011 F1 season is due to start in Melbourne, Australia over the weekend of 25-27 March.
