Formula One might have a US driver before the US Grand Prix
The United States of America has not produced any promising Formula One drivers in the recent past. The last American driver to compete in the sport was Scott Speed, who became only the second driver from the US in almost 20 years. Scott was the second driver
after Michael Andretti left the sport in 1993.
However, it seems that the Americans still have hope, as 19-year-old Conor Daly recently said that he hopes to drive in Formula One someday. Since the sport will be hosting a US Grand Prix in a year’s time, most of the teams might be looking for a good American
driver, and Conor seems like the best option for the spot. Also since the US Grand Prix is expected to be held in Austin, bringing in a local driver would definitely benefit the sport in terms of promotion and viewership.
Daly and his father made their first visit to Austin and believe that they will return to the track soon, but the next time they visit the track they hope to be in the pits with a Formula One team.
“The biggest boost to his (Daly’s) career could be Austin, Texas. Austin will be the mecca of motorsports for North and South America. You've got the perfect platform,” said Derek, who joined his son in talks with potential sponsors during their visit.
The US circuit is designed by one of the best track designers of the world, Hermann Tilke, and it is every young drivers dream to drive on one of his tracks.
“F1 is the top level of racing. That's where the best of the best are. It's a huge stage. That's why we need an American to represent our country on the top step of the podium,” said Conor. Former American driver and promoter Tavo Hellmund also recently
stated that he would love to see an American driver competing at the first Grand Prix to be held on the newly constructed US track.
It would definitely be an exhilarating sight for American Formula One fans to see one of their countrymen on the track; it would be like a dream come true indeed.
