Formula One news – Button believes Sebastian Vettel not to win the title as he is too accident prone
McLaren driver Jenson Button believes that Sebastian Vettel has not been consistent enough to take the title this year but hopes to stay in the fight for the title by resurrecting his own campaign the Monza in two weeks’ time.
Three of the drivers competing for the drivers’ title were not able to score any points at the Belgian Grand Prix past weekend. Jenson Button was looking very strong as he was in second place but was taken out by Vettel on lap 16, during his attempt to overtake the British in damp conditions. This was a huge blow to both of the drivers’ title chances and left the current world champion 35 points short of the championship leader Lewis Hamilton.
“He just made a mistake, and for me it was a big mistake that cost me a lot of points. It was a very costly mistake and I'm the person who has paid for it, but he's made a couple of them this year,” Button told the Press Association.
The current world champion added that he is not claiming that the German driver is dangerous. However, for Button, he has made too many mistakes this year in order to fight for the title. He thinks that Sebastian is extremely quick and no one can take that away from him. The British praised Sebastian’s statistics this year, as he was able to secure the pole position for seven times this season, which is extraordinary keeping the amount of races the Formula 1 has had up until now. Nevertheless, throwing away that many races is also very surprising.
Jenson Button, being one of the most experienced drivers in the Formula 1 has a career of almost 10 years. The first team Button joined was Williams in 2001 before joining Renault. The British struggled with the team but scored good results with Renault in 2002. Jenson signed with BAR for 3 years in 2003 and gained a lot of attention from the critics and spectators during that time. After joining Honda in 2006 for 3 years, Button was able to impress Ross Brawn and grabbed a spot in his team Brawn GP, winning the Championship for the team in their very first year. Button was offered a spot in McLaren for 2010 that he accepted, and is currently driving with the team. He would have had quite a chance of retaining his title if things did not turn out the way they did at Spa.
The accident hurt Button very dearly as he said that it is a massive blow as it took very important points away from McLaren driver. However, Jenson still seems very confident about the current situation of the drivers’ standings and believes he still has a shot.
“When I got out of my car and walked into my drivers' room I said what happened had massively hurt my championship, and coming back from it would be very difficult. However, I was very down at that point, as you would be after losing so many points. I had gone from a massive high to a massive low,” Button told the Press Association.
If we look at the drivers’ standings, Button is 35 points short of Hamilton that the current world champion thinks, is a lot. This means 14 points, if we convert it to the previous points system but it is not impossible. Jenson will go to Monza positive so that he can have a good race and come up with victories. Otherwise, it will be very difficult for Button putting him in a very uncomfortable position.
“So that's my aim. It is a circuit I love, I will do very well on this year, confident in the car and that I will have a good weekend. I learned last year that you have to take every race as it comes and work on fine-tuning the car, on making sure it is the best for that race and not thinking too far ahead. In addition, I am definitely thinking like that for now. In two weeks' time we'll be in Monza, we'll have a good car and I will be fighting for a victory,” said the British driver.
