Formula One news: Karun Chandhok delighted with the Korean Track
The Yeongam track had seen much conflicts and concerns all through the month, as many suspected that it would not be able to host the first Korean Grand Prix scheduled to take place this October.
However, the HRT’s driver, Karun Chandhok, who finished testing the track in the Red Bull car silenced everyone, thus expressing his views that everyone would love the track and it would surely be soon ready to host the race.
As the Indian racer returned from the first-ever drive of the Korean International track Formula One’s official website talked to him about his views about the track and upcoming race.
Chandhok talked about his experience of the track expressing his joy for being the first-ever driver on the track for which he was grateful to the race organisers of the venue, KAVO (Korea Auto Valley Operation) as well as Red Bull for providing him with this opportunity. Also, he said that he was thankful to his team, Hispania Racing for permitting him to drive around the new Korean track.
He further expressed his experience of the venture that it was an awesome feeling to be the first man to leave tyre marks on a spotless circuit that had just been developed. He takes the entire task as a real privilege, which not many drivers are able to get all through their career. He was also delighted with the way the fans treated him, which enhanced his feelings of exploring the new circuit.
The incident was the first-ever chance for many of the Koreans to have seen a live Formula One car or driver, which they embraced incredibly. “We had a huge crowd of media and fans as well as the Sports Minister and other dignitaries. Their enthusiasm was fantastic to see - it almost felt like the fanatical Japanese following. When Formula One comes here in October they will find a fan-base ready to show them what Korean fans are all about,” the Indian driver went on telling.
Besides everything else he praised the circuit telling that it encompasses a good mix of corners. He excitedly added that the initial parts of the track offers long straights and later comes the lazy corners, which could give a lot of opportunity to overtake.
He further went on explaining that the turn two of the track is followed by some slipstreaming, whereas later after the turn seven the circuit brings up four high-speed corners, along with altering elevation levels.
Moreover, he was asked about the teams, which he thinks would be able to perform better on this track for. The racer replied, “Based on Spa, McLaren, Ferrari and even Renault look to be ahead of Red Bull Racing in terms of straight-line speed, so the first third of the lap will suit them, but then the fast flowing corners around the rest of the lap could bring it back towards Red Bull, so I think it'll be close between them like we saw at Spa.”
The elevated driver kept on emphasizing the fact that the track could be best described as ‘enormous’, he further depicted that the paddock and the grandstands of the circuit look pretty well and the lush green pastures and sea that lies just outside the paddock makes a beautiful scenery.
He told that above everything else he was happy at the fact that the track is almost ready for the race now, as there were many speculations that it might not be able to stage the race of this year. Chandhok finally told, “The asphalt and kerbs need a bit more work and the access roads and paddock have to be finished off, but the organisers say it is all okay for according to their time frames.”
