Question:

Formula and Rice Cereal?

by  |  earlier

My daughters ped. told me today to start giving her Similac Sensitive R.S. (the red one) because of the rice in the formula. I have a whole bunch of the Similac Advanced right now. Can I just add a little bit of Rice Cereal to the Similac Advanced?

She was diagnosed with acid reflux as to the reason for the formula change and rice.

  1. How old is your baby?  Babies should not get solids until they are 6 months old.  especially if she is having some sensitivity to her formula you don't want to be giving her rice cereal now.

  2. you should never put baby cereal in a bottle.

do not add it, just go get the right kind and give her what the doc says...

I know formula is expensive - but your daughters health is worth it.  maybe you could sell your unopened similac advanced online or something - or try to get WIC.

Well, NO, rice cereal + Similac Advanced does not equal Similac R.S.

  3. I don't know for sure (you can check the ingredients to verify) but I think that the whole composition of Similac Sensitive R.S. is different then the Similac Advanced. If this is the case then the ingredients of Similac Advanced may be exacerbating the problem, so while the doc said to add rice cereal to the bottle I'm assuming that that was a temporary solution, just to finish the already opened can of Similac Advanced. But not as a long term solution. Donate (or sell for discount price if $$ is an issue) to a baby formula donation center near you (you can probably google it, or ask at your local community center) the extra Similac Advanced that you have (or if you have a friend that will buy it off you, you can do that too!!) and start getting the Similac Sensitive R.S. that the doc wants you to switch to.

  4. rice cereal is not the same as formula. I used to put rice cereal in my sons bottle because he had reflux but it made no difference. You just make up a formula bottle as usual and add a teaspoon of rice cereal.

Make sure she is always awake when you give her a bottle with rice cereal in it because the milk will be thicker and she could choke.

My doctor, midwives, mother, family and friends all told me to put rice cereal in my sons bottle. I tried it for 3 days to see if it would make a difference and it diden't so i stopped.

I hope it helps with your daughters reflux. But if not then try a formula thats made for reflux.

    Goodluck.
