Question:

Formula fed baby with runny, seedy stool?

My 11 week old has always been formula fed and has for the last few days been having frequent, runny and seedy stool. Until now he always went every 2 days and the stool had a thicker consistency. We changed from Similac Advance to Similac Sensitive so I'm assume the formula change is responsible. However, I can't find anything on the internet about a formula fed baby having this happen. Is this normal?

  1. my son actually went through the same thing during a formula change, I changed him from similac neosure (he is preemie) to similac sensitive and his stool looked seedy for the first day or 2 but now it has gone back to normal.  I'm not sure if its normal but I think that it happened because of the sudden change in formula...but like I said it only happened for the first day or 2 and now I have no worries.

  2. It may be the change of formula. Normally runny seedy stool is the product of breast feeding. If it concerns you, ask your doctor.

  3. My son also experienced this when we used the Similac sensitive.  He also around that age started going from one good BM a day to several.  He is now back to the normal stuff and still poops several times a day - and it is a little thicker than the sensitive formula.  As a matter of fact, I use the sensitive stuff when he seems constipated to loosen him up!

Go through this checklist:  Is he acting normal?  Does he seem too fussy?  Does he seem lethargic?  Does he have a temperature?  Is he eating well?  Is just about every diaper wet?  Is he sleeping normally?  Is he gaining weight normally?

If your baby is acting normally, I wouldn't worry about it.  If you notice a change in his personality, you should consider calling into your doctor.  They are the best authority.

  4. not true, my children were all formula fed and they all had the seedy stool. their p**p is going to constantly change in form and thickness, it's all completely normal unless ur baby has constant runny poo, but if u are changing formulas, then that will cause the runniness.

  5. Totally normal... A change in formula can result in a change in stools. A newborns are known for all types of poos. I never breastfed mine and on occasion it would be sort of seedy and runny. Then thicker the next day, runny the next, etc. however if you are really concerned call the dr, they will reassure you.
