Formula for choosing the right sized flat panel TV.?

I was told that there's a formula for determining what the optimal sized flat panel screen would be, given viewing distance. If anyone knows where I can find that, it'd be appreciated. Thanks!

  1. Ideal TV size range:

    minimum diagonal TV size (inches) =  viewing distance (in inches) / 3

    maximum diagonal TV size (inches) =  viewing distance (in inches) / 2

    For example; 12 ft viewing distance to TV (144 in) = min 48"  to maximum 72" diagonal TV screen size
