Formula one title race to go down to the wire
The Formula one 2010 season has by far been the most competitive, most closest and most exciting one in modern era. All 5 candidates for the world title have been battling it out throughout the season, and the leader-board has
been changing up and down after every single race. Fernando Alonso stormed to a resounding and flawless win in Singapore to notch up his 4th win for the season, and got right back in the reckoning for his 3rd world title.
Christian Horner, the team principal of Red Bull believes that the season will go right down to the final race, and the champion will not be decided until the checkered flag is raised in Abu Dhabi.
There is only a difference of 25 points that separates the top 5 in the championship table right now, which is equivalent to a pole position.
Mark Webber from Red Bull continues to head the leader board after a 3rd place finish in Singapore. He is leading Fernando Alonso by 11 points who is in 2nd place.
Horner believes that the new points system would enable all of the 5 drivers to keep the hope of winning the title alive till the final race. He added that one race here or there can tilt the title race towards one driver but would
not determine the winner.
"The likelihood is with the quality of drivers and teams involved it will go down to the wire," said Horner.
"I sincerely hope it doesn't and I sincerely hope it is one of our guys who ties it up before that."
Things have changed dramatically in last few races. Lewis Hamilton the 2008 world champion was heading the table few races back. But it was Mark Webber from Red Bull who reclaimed the top spot after a win in the Belgian Grand Prix.
The 2 McLarens of Hamilton and Jenson Button did not enjoy the best of times in the races leading up to the mid season break. Webber made full use and stretched up a lead. Hamilton though came back after the break and got back on top, but last 2 races have
been in simple words disastrous for the youngest world champion.
In Italy Felipe Massa of Ferrari ran into him and knocked him out of the race, as a result he ended up with no points and got down to the 2nd spot. Hamilton was looking to make ground on Webber at Singapore but ironically
it was Webber who nudged Hamilton’s car and ended his race for 2nd successive Grand Prix. Hamilton has now dropped down to 3rd place on the driver’s leader board.
Meanwhile Fernando Alonso had made a late surge for the title, winning last 2 Grand Prixs in Italy and Singapore. The Spaniard has shown great grit and determination to claw his way back in the hunt for the title. Ferrari has made
some fantastic upgrades to their car during the break and results are there for everyone to see. Not only Alonso’s performance but the way Massa moved into top 10 after starting from bottom of the grid was heartening for Ferrari fans. And in return should
be frightening for Ferrari rivals because the prancing horse seems to be getting in top gear just at the right time.
Sebastian Vettel the team mate of Mark Webber finished 2nd at Singapore after pushing Alonso all the way. Vettel is 4th in the table 21 points behind Webber and behind him is the current world champion Jenson
Button who is on 5th and 25 points adrift of the Aussie at top of the table.
