Particle board comes in big sheets and is usually sold in sheets measuring 4' x 8' in different thicknesses.

Depending on thickness, MDF can range from 12 to 30 dollars a sheet. Check www.lowes.com for prices in your area.

I will say, though, that MDF and particle board do not stand up to weather very well and will disintegrate over time of not sealed or treated. Even if treated, it will eventually rot. You might consider the extra expense of using pressure treated lumber which is designed for outdoor use.
