what can be learned about life of the past (millions of years ago) from the study of teeth?

  1. That we weren't in fact, monkeys!

    Take a look at the enamel.


  2. A whole variety of facts: what the organism ate, how old it was (wear patterns), and what stage of evolution it was in. For example, if you were to show us a lower jawbone of a hominid, I could speculate as to how old it was based on the shape of the jawbone - the more parabolic the jawbone, the more recent (as we evolved, our jawbones went from rectangular in appearance to parabolic).

    I'm no expert on other animals (Anthropology is the study of humans and their close relatives!) but the same basic principles apply to other organisms.
