Question:

Foster Kids In Between Counties?

Okay, so I work at a group home in California for at-risk boys aged 11-16; basically, it’s an alternative for kids that have been in trouble with the law instead of sending them to a work camp, juvenile detention, etc... None of our kids really have violent propensities. Anyway, so there’s this one kid. He is 14. To put the confusion of this situation into perspective, he is from Kern County (Bakersfield) and is living at our group home in El Dorado County (Placerville) where Kern placed him. I, a college student working at the group home, live in Sacramento County (which is also the City of Sacramento). So – this kid has been here a while, maybe 8 months. He’s doing very well and is overall a great kid. After the school year ends in May and he completes the 8th grade, he is more than likely going to go into the foster system. He doesn’t really have parents or anyone to take him. I'd like to let him live with my family, but don't know how to make that happen. (See extra details...)

  1. I'm not sure of your age but you shouldn't be parenting with your mother.  It's also a conflict of interest in the health care business.  I wouldn't suggest bringing this up with your employer, there could be ramifications for your potential boundary issues.

  2. You need to get a jude on your side.....children have beenn placed across county lines in Pennsylvania....however I am unsure of the law in California. Do you know any social workers that you can ask?

  3. I'd suggest talking to someone at the group home about it or have your mother contact the boy's case worker. By the way, I think it's a great idea. Good luck with everything.

  4. Talk to the home and ask them what they suggest or find out in the town your family lives. Or better still they could find out for you as they would know the avenues in which to pursue for this. Good luck.  :)
