West Brom goalkeeper http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ben-Foster-c7445 has taken full responsibility for the Baggies’ defeat at the hands of reigning champions Manchester City this past Saturday.
West Brom had taken the lead against the champions through Shane Long but had ended up losing, courtesy of a brace by substitute Edin Dzeko.
This marked West Brom’s first home defeat of the season, and would’ve surely disappointed the fans, the players and manager Steve Clarke, who had guided the Baggies to their best start to the English top flight in years.
City found themselves a man down in the first half when http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/James-Milner-c17706 was sent off by the referee. The player had brought down Shane Long in a last ditch tackle, and was given his marching orders on account of denying a clear goal scoring opportunity.
West Brom then took the lead in the second half when Irishman Long slotted home the opener. However, the champions fought back and scored through Dzeko, who came on in the second half.
The Bosnian striker then added his second goal with only 10 minutes remaining on the clock. The striker’s first goal had resulted from a cross which Foster failed to collect.
The 29-year old goalkeeper admits that he should not have rushed out to catch the ball, and should’ve shown more composure by staying on his line. Speaking to the club’s official website, Foster said:
“It was a great ball in, to be fair. I thought I’d come and get something on it but once you are your way you think ‘oh no, here we go’. You are hoping the defender gets it but it was a great ball in and a great header as well. I should have stayed on my
line.”
The former Manchester United player then explained how his side were unlucky to concede the second goal in the dying minutes of the game. Having seen his team control the game after Milner’s sending off, the player was disappointed at losing the game so
dramatically.
“The second one is credit to us that we were trying to win the game against Manchester City”, he added. “We were giving it a go at least. They broke us and that is what £70 million worth of talent does for you. I’m gutted."
