Foster homes? help!?

I'm sixteen and live with my mom we can't find a place big enough to rent and my mom can't afford it (there's more complications). So how do foster homes work? Would I be able to live in the same town? It's either that or I'm going homeless.

  1. Wow...i'm really sorry about this.  Can you guys at least afford a studio for the time being?  And don't think about being homeless...they have shelters so you and your mom aren't separated.

I feel really bad for your situation, i'll keep you in my prayers.

  2. If you were a baby your mom could drop you at a fire station, but I don't think that works at 16.  Call Child Protective Services in your area and ask them.  Tell them that you are soon to be homeless can they help place you in a home.  They will ask you about relatives so make sure you have exhausted all of those possibilities.  Good Luck.

  3. I took in foster kids.  They try to put them near mom. I was in the next city apx 15 miles away.

  4. You're 16; get a job to help out. Even if it's just after school and on the weekend, it would be worth it.

Be willing to live together in a studio apartment for a while. Do all you can to make that happen. It really doesn't matter if it's small; it will keep you out of the perils of foster care and you'll be able to stay with your mom.

  5. You stay in the same county.  However at your age you may end up living in the shelter, there are not enough homes.

You need to call CPS.  Your mother has to sign away some of her rights, like talking to you daily.   They may not take you unless your mother is neglecting you, and living in the car or a hotel is not legal grounds to take children.

How about dad?  Other family?    Pastor?

  6. Buy a contingency sleeping bag.
