Question:

Fostering a Child in Canada?

Hubby and I are thinking of fostering. Possibly adopting in the future, but want to start off fostering kids between the age of 4-14.

Has anyone done this? Just looking for some people to share stories with me.

Also, do they fully reimburse you for all aspects of the childs care, food, clothes, etc? Hubby thinks they also give you a small amount above that as an incentive to foster, but I don't know.

  1. You are given a monthly stipend to offset the costs of care for the child. This varies province to province. Most foster parents add in a bit of their own money to the government allotment.

I suggest you contact your local children's services authority and ask them. They will be able to answer all of your questions. The contact numbers will be listed in the blue pages of your local phone book under either the children's services, foster parents or social services heading.

  2. all I know is in the usa they do give you a check each month when your a foster parent. But it really isn't alot. The most important thing is that your fostering for love...My son and daughter were foster parents for a short time then they were lucky enough to have someone call them that knew they wanted to adopt, this person had a friend that just gave birth and didnt want the baby, so they adopted her, she is my 2yr old granddaughter and the most precious smartest girl, of course I'm predjudice toward her, lol, my advice for you if you do want to adopt is get the word out to Everyone, someday you may get that phone call to.  Godbless you , DonnaG

  3. They give you a certain amount of support for the child a month but it does not fully cover the needs of that child at all and it certainly should not be looked at as an easy paycheck. medical and dental will be covored but the check they give you each month isn't a payment for you taking the kid in it is a 'reimbersment' for the food, shelter an cloathing that you provided. You do not get everything you spent.

fostering needs t be done for the right reasons, these children have problems that need to be adressed and taken care of in a loving and kind matter and they need to feel as though they are wanted and appreciated. It takes a strong person to be a foster parent because of the **** you will be put through, especially when dealing with older children and teens. And this **** is not all from the problems the children have from neglect or abuse but from the system aswell.

Generally the foster system is looking for a stable family environment who is willing to take in a child long or short term, is able toprovide the child with their own room and has at least one adult be the stay at home parent. They do not want these children going into daycares or having sitters as they need the stability and familiarity of a constant adult.

I am looking serioulsy into fostercare soon as I turn 25 (which is the age in which you have to be to begin being a fostor parent or to adopt.) and hoping to eventually adopt through the system.
