Question:

Foul question on the cue ball?

Ok, my opponent attempts to hit the cue ball, aiming for the near top of the ball for follow through.

He makes a few "ready strokes for aim", then takes the full stroke and the cue goes over the cue ball and does not touch it. He completely misses the cue ball.

Is this a foul and where may I find the rule if it may be online?

  1. Standard fouls can be found in the first link below.

Since your specific example is not mentioned, it's not a foul.  It may also be helpful to check out the definitions section (second link):

    8.2 Shot

A shot begins when the tip contacts the cue ball due to a forward stroke motion of the cue stick. A shot ends when all balls in play have stopped moving and spinning. A shot is said to be legal if the shooter did not foul during the shot.

Since the tip did not contact the cue ball, the shot did not start.

If the links don't work, go to http://www.wpa-pool.com and click on World Rules > Rules of Play

  2. the only way that u can get a foul shot is if you total miss the ball that u are attempting to hit with the cue ball.its not like baseball if u swing and miss the ball its a strike.

  3. Its not a shot untill its hit..if he'd of accidently hit readying his strokes that would be a shot as long as the ball moved 6" or hit a rail.

  4. To   my    knowledge   this   is   not   a    fould   because   you   didn't   touch   the   cue   ball.   It   is   not   a   shot  untill   the   cue   ball   is   hit.

  5. It's not like golf.  You don't have to count the 'strokes at' the ball.

This is not a foul.  You are really reaching here.
