Question:

Foul smell from drain?

I have a foul smell coming from my shower drain and have narrowed it down to the fact that it only smells when my air conditioner is running. I does not come from the kitchen sink (which is closer to the conditioning unit). I think that because the air is becoming colder, it is compressing and sucking the warmer air in. How can I fix this problem? Does this indicate a problem with the trap in the bathroom?

  1. Poor alot of water into the drain when you get that smell and also baking soda good luck

  2. USE ODONIL, ROOM FRESHNER,OR AIR WICK

  3. Try pouring some baking soda and vinager down the drain its suppose to help with smells.  You can also put lemon juice down the drain to tame the smells.

  4. call a plumber

  5. Traditionally, a kitchen sink is used more than a shower (unless you take six showers a day).

When you run water in any of your drains it will fill the 'P' trap. That water prevents sewer gasses from coming up into your house.

A/C units take moisture out of the air in your house. Even cold water evaporates when the dry air hits it.

Thus: Your A/C unit is drying out your air (which is good). The water in your shower drain is evaporating faster than you are replacing it.

Solution: Put something over it or put the plug in when you're not using the shower. This will prevent (or slow down) the evaporation process and leave that water in there.

  6. I see the answer that stated VENT pipe, got a thumb down, which is confusing. That would be the first or second area I'd check.

P traps in your system, may in fact, also be corrupted. The smell is either sewage gasses backing up, or residue in the more adjacent plumbing.

I'd be amazed to actually learn of any correlation, between AC temps and odors in plumbing.

I'd check all the vent stacks, I'd have all the cleanout plugs removed, I'd have the entire system flushed, I'd check every P trap, I might do as suggested, Cap the shower drain when not in use.

    Just my two "sense"
