we found four baby birds that fell out their nest about 2 hrs ago. one of the birds drowned in some water outside. another died from the fall i guess. two of them are alright and we have them in their nest under a lamp. please someone tell me what to feed them and how close to keep them under the lamp. we have put an egg yolk and water mixed it and feed that to them in a syrenge.its weird though cause one on the birds is older then the other. he has more pin feathers.idk really anything about birds so some tips could help. thanks. also is it normal for one to keep its mouth open and breathe? he kind of makes a clicky noise when he breathes.

  1. my mom found some baby birds once and she fed them oatmeal. Be careful not to overfeed them

  2. Great job with the rescue.  Never feed worms, bread, milk..Do not feed raw egg yolk. Do not feed with a syringe, do not place liquid in the mouth of a baby bird it can cause aspiration pneumonia and without antibiotic treatment will probably be fatal.  The clicking you are hearing could be that and he may not make it It sounds like he is struggling to breathe. You are doing great by keeping them warm.  They need to be fed a dog food based diet found at starling talk.  Feed with a stir stick or the end of a straw cut to a spoon.  Nestlings need to be bed every 20-30 minutes.  If  older then approx every 45 minutes.  You cannot over feed a baby it will stop begging when full. Please go to my profile and you will find the recipe along with the links to starlingtalk.  I am having issues posting them in here.  Hope I was able to help.

    How are the babies today?

  3. The clicky noise is likely the sound of the egg yolk sticking to his mouth, you need to call the pet store and get some powder food for them, you mix with water or oatmeal will do if the other is no option. the reason that one is bigger is because he would have hatched 1 day earlier. So that is one days growth for him.

Mix oatmeal with water and feed every 2.5 to 3 hours. Do not over feed them. A tiny amount, depending on the species will be fine, they may seem really hungry but that is just instinct. Make sure you put something over them to sleep as it will represent their mother on top.

    Good luck, dont loose hope.

  4. You need to identify what birds they are. The important thing is to keep them hydrated and warm overnight, if they can make it overnight, they should be fine. Dont use the syringe to feed them water, you can drop little drops of water around their beaks. Also, after you've identifed the baby birds, you can get a proper feed for them at the pet store. The people could help you with some info like how to prepare the food and so on. Actually, what you're doing looks quite good, feeding them mashed egg yolk in water, the yolk has a lot of nutrients essential for the babies. That's what they feed to pigeon and dove babies as well. Just in case your babies are the insect or fruit feeding kinds of birds, it's best to identify the babies first and the rest should be easy.

The most important thing is to keep them warm overnight, most people wake up early the next morning to find that the babies have already died and hardened up. Heat is the most important thing to these babies. You have to keep them in an enclosed box (they can't be left in the open they'll freeze at night) with a few holes and keep the inside warm. You can fill a water bottle with hot water and put it inside (cap it tight!! and that there're no leaks) and the warmth will escape from the hot bottle to the surronding and make the inside of the box like a incubator. If the birds start opening their beaks and panting, they're too hot.

Also dont overfeed, best is once every 3 or 4 hr. Different birds feed at different times so best is to identify what babies you have.

  5. Well you should not have taken the nest if you would have gentally put the nest back the mommy might have come back. i recently found a baby bird 2 weeks ago we put it back in the nest and the mama came back. taking care of baby birds is a extreme challenge. - Hannah

  6. You fed them an egg yolk?! I mean, seriously, think about it...

Feed them mashed up insects, and the stereotypical worm.

  7. the lamp shouldn't be right over them if it is to close they could get burnt or over heat. The birds will have their mouths open maybe because they are hungry or thirsty and that clicking noise would probably be their breathing because they are in so much panick. you need to leave them by themselves and make sure no one go near them or they will die from a heart attack beacause they are panicking so much. Give them some fresh water and a little bit of food.

Keep them for the night and set them free to were you found them tomorrow.

    Good luck!

  8. Wow thats so sweet...well pls do a bit of research about these birds....and take good care of them....keep going...

  9. please look in the phone book and find out if there is a nature center that takes in wildlife for rehabilitation!

baby birds need to be fed about every 20 minutes and it's tough to handle!

try feeding them small pieces of dog food that are made super soft by mixing with water and small bits of fruit like berries and grapes.
